Hawks Drop Weekend Finale to No.13 Ramblers

QUINCY, Ill. –The Quincy University men's volleyball team dropped its opening MIVA matches versus the 13th ranked Ramblers of Loyola Chicago this weekend. The Hawks fell in the weekend finale on Saturday (Feb 6.) night 25-17, 25-10, 25-20. 

Michael Ladner led QU with eight kills on 19 total attempts while posting a .211 hitting percentage. Noam Hannoun led QU with seven digs, and setter Yoran Raymaekers paced QU with 19 assists as the Hawks posted a .141 attacking percentage during the match. 

QU committed 14 service errors during the match, and had zero aces. The Ramblers had eight service aces compared to 13 service errors during the match. The pin hitters from Loyola were efficient as Cole Schlothauer and Luke Denton combined for 20 kills on 31 total attempts with just two errors. 

Set 1
The score was 9-8 after all-MIVA setter Garrett Zolg committed a ball handling error for the Ramblers. Loyola responded by scoring five of the next six points and held a five point advantage at 14-9. Omari Wheeler, who only posted two kills during the match, had one on a ball setup from Raymaekers to execute a kill and made the score 14-10. Loyola responded with a 6-2 run and led 20-12. The Ramblers ultimately finished the first set on a kill from Luke Denton setup by Zolg. 

Set 2
The Ramblers dominated the second set as they began the frame on a 8-1 run. The Ramblers continued to keep pace, and led 14-4 before a Denton service error gave the Hawks a point. QU had back to back kills from Nathan Lawton and Zach Reider to make the score 16-8, but the Ramblers responded with a 4-1 run and led 20-9. Loyola finished the set with five consecutive points including three kills, and capped off the frame with a service ace.

Set 3
The Hawks started the third set with more energy and focus, and trailed 11-10 after consecutive kills from Cooper Coleman and Lawton. The Hawks kept pace with Loyola until they broke through with a 5-1 run to extended their advantage to 21-15. Lawton fired back with consecutive kills, but Loyola finished the set with three kills and a service error to close out the frame 25-20.

The Hawks will travel to Fort Wayne, Indiana next weekend to square off against Purdue Fort Wayne in the Hawks first road match of the season on Friday (Feb 5) and Saturday (Feb 6).
