St. Louis, MO - The women's basketball team hit the road for a mid-week contest at Maryville University on Tuesday and were led by Aleksandra Petrovic who had a career performance with 17 points, 13 rebounds and 3 steals. QU ultimately fell 74-70 in overtime but will host the Saints in two days with a chance for revenge.
Quincy started the game on a 10-4 run after Petrovic knocked down two foul shots with 2:40 left in the first quarter. The Saints quickly closed the gap with a 6-0 run to tie the game at 10-10. Petrovic knocked down two more foul shots, and the Hawks held a two point advantage early in the second quarter at 13-11.
The Hawks extended their lead to five points when Gabrielle Burns knocked down a free throw with 7:57 left in the half at 16-11.
Neither team gained a significant lead until the Saint's knocked down a 3-pointer with 1:34 left in the second quarter and added a layup to hold a 28-22 lead at halftime.
Quincy erased the six point halftime deficit with a 16-7 run to open the third quarter, and the Hawks held a 38-35 lead midway through the frame after a Sarah Nelson layup.
This three-point advantage was the largest for the Hawks in the second half.
After falling behind again briefly, QU took back the lead ten seconds into the fourth quarter when Marta Rivera knocked down a jump shot in the paint to make the score 42-41.
The Saints' Jayda Jansen knocked down two free throws with 1:26 left in the fourth quarter to give Maryville a five-point advantage at 58-53.
Quincy responded with an and-one from Petrovic, and Nelson knocked down two free throws with 33 seconds left in the fourth quarter to tie the game at 58-58.
The Saints' Jansen made two more clutch free throws with six seconds left, but gave the Hawks time for one final play.
QU found its leading scorer, Laney Lantz and she converted on the jump shot as time winded down in the fourth quarter to tie the game and force overtime.
Maryville began the extra period with a 10-2 run, and the Saints led 70-62 with 2:10 left in OT after two more Jansen foul shots.
The Hawks responded with a bucket from Nelson and a 3-pointer from Petrovic to make the score 70-67 with 42 second left in overtime. The Saints extended their lead to five points when Antoinette Mussorici knocked down a shot with 20 seconds left.
QU's Marta Rivera splashed a 3-point field goal with 15 seconds left in overtime to cut the deficit to two points at 72-70. The Saints' scored on the following possession to seal the victory.
Quincy had a season high 15 assists and Dami Adeyinka led the way with six. The Hawks also had a season high 12 steals as seven different Hawks notched at least one steal.
Petrovic eclipsed a career-high with 13 rebounds as well for the Hawks during her 45 minute performance.
The Hawks continued to shoot well at the foul line as they went 21-23 and improved their season free throw mark to 80% which is second best in the GLVC.
This loss was the fifth time this year that QU has lost by less than ten points.
