WINTER HAVEN, Fl. - The Quincy University softball team finished their trip to Florida with a .500 record after sweeping Post University and Ashland University on Tuesday (Mar. 10). The Hawks shutout both teams behind dominant performances on the mound from
Jayle Jennings and
Mac Kenzie Collier. Jennings led QU to an 8-0 win over Post before Collier followed with a shutout performance of her own in a 3-0 victory against Ashland.
Quincy 8, Post 0
Jayle Jennings stepped onto the mound Tuesday morning and was a force to be reckoned with. The freshman from Vandalia, Missouri carried a no-hitter through the first three innings as the Eagles had no answer on offense.
As for the Hawks, they got the scoring started early. QU loaded the bases with just one out in the bottom of the first after Jennings doubled,
Ashley Gerber walked, and
Chelsea Hooker reached on an error.
Taylor Downen and
Casey Brennan later cracked back-to-back RBI singles to give Quincy a 2-0 lead.
The Hawks added one more when
Aubrie Dodd reached on an RBI fielder's choice that scored Hooker, pushing the lead to three.
QU picked up another run in the second inning on another RBI fielder's choice by
Kari Sarhage that scored
Courtney Kernich. This brought Quincy's lead to 4-0 after two.
Jennings worked a 1-2-3 top of the third to put the bats back in the hands of the Hawks.
Dodd got things rolling in the third by drawing a walk, which brought
Madeline Ruzicka to the plate.
The power hitter from the Peach State roped her team-leading third home run of the season to extend QU's lead to 6-0.
The Eagles picked up their first hit of the game in the fourth inning, but Jennings stifled that attack by retiring the next three batters.
Quincy tacked on two insurance runs in the fourth with an RBI single from
Roni Wingerter and an RBI fielder's choice from Downen.
Jennings and the QU defense took the 8-0 lead into the fifth and worked a quick inning to earn the short-game win over the Eagles.
Quincy 3, Ashland 0
The Hawks stayed hot in all phases of the game against Ashland.
Jayle Jennings led off the contest with a single to right field and was quickly right back in the dugout two pitches later when
Ashley Gerber ripped a two-run home run.
Kari Sarhage followed by battling her way on with a ten-pitch walk. The junior advanced to third after two wild pitches and scored on a sacrifice line out by
Casey Brennan.
QU led 3-0 after the top of the first and that is all
Mac Kenzie Collier needed.
The junior from Custer Park, Illinois tossed a gem of a game, allowing just seven hits and striking out five. Â
The solid defensive play from the Hawks thwarted any attack that Ashland built up, as the Hawks recorded their second straight shutout win 3-0.
