ROLLA, Mo. – The Quincy men's basketball team came out firing on Thursday night (Feb. 27), but the Miners of Missouri S&T roared back in the second half to grab a 82-77 win at home.
1st Half
Quincy looked ready to go in the first half of Thursday's game. The Hawks shot an efficient 64.7% from the floor in the opening twenty minutes.
Four different Hawks got in the scoring column after the tip-off.
Charles Callier,
Ryan Briscoe,
Aziz Fadika and
Viktor Kovacevic helped Quincy jump out to a 10-2 lead in the first two and a half minutes.
Tanner Stuckman got involved when a five-point burst gave the Hawks a 14-3 lead.
Adam Moore later hit a three-pointer at the 14-minute mark to keep QU's lead in double figures, 19-9.
The Miners made a surge by cutting the Hawks lead to four points. Quincy held a 31-27 advantage with 5:09 left before the half.
A minute later, the Hawks used a 7-0 run to pull back ahead 41-29.
At the break, QU held a 45-37 lead.
2nd Half
The scripts were flipped in the second half of the game. The Hawks were outscored 45-32 in the last twenty minutes.
Quincy cooled off considerably compared to the first half. The Hawks bolstered just a 37% field goal percentage, matched with making 30% of their three's, which allowed the Miners to get back in the game.
An 8-0 run by Missouri S&T in the first four minutes cut into Quincy's lead. The Miners trailed just 51-48 with 15:45 left to play.
Two minutes later, the score was tied 53-53.
The Hawks got buckets from
Justin Warren,
Viktor Kovacevic, and
Aziz Fadika to take a 59-55 lead.
This four-point lead remained with 6:41 left in the game, but the Miners finished strong.
Missouri S&T took the lead for just the second time in the game with 3:39 to play, and they did not look back in the time remaining.
Quincy was unable to make a late run and fell 82-77. QU missed five free throws in the second half, including four in the last five minutes.
Next Game
The Hawks end the season against Maryville University on Saturday (Feb. 29) following the women's game.
