Hawks Comeback Attempt Falls Short At Bellarmine

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The Quincy University women's basketball team traveled to Louisville Saturday (Feb. 15) afternoon for a tightly contested, defensive matchup with Bellarmine University. Both teams were knotted at 15 after one quarter, but after only scoring eight points in the second and giving up 18, Quincy was never able to regain the lead. The Hawks fell to the Knights by a score of 64-57.

How It Happened
1st Half
The Hawks got off to a slow start, trailing 8-2 midway through the first quarter. Dami Adeyinka drained a 3-pointer at the 4:48 mark that sparked the perimeter shooting for Quincy.

Shots kept falling for the Hawks, as they went on an 11-2 run to give themselves their first lead, 13-10. The Knights responded with a three-pointer of their own, and the game was locked even at the end of the first.

Quincy shot 75% from three on 3-of-4 attempt's in the first quarter, with makes from three different QU players.

The second quarter proved to be the difference maker. The Hawks couldn't buy a bucket in the second frame due to the stifling defense of Bellarmine. The Knights outscored Quincy 19-8 and held them to 18% shooting in the quarter.

Marta Rivera and Ella Golbald connected from three, being the only two field goals made by the Hawks in the second quarter. Quincy went into halftime trailing 34-23.

2nd Half
The Hawks came out of the half with a sense of urgency, scoring the first 5 points of the third quarter.  Aleksandra Petrovic later hit a jump shot to close the gap to four, as QU still trailed 36-32.

Bellarmine proceeded to go on a shooting streak of their own, opening up a 13-4 run and extending their lead back to eleven, 49-38.

Laney Lantz did her best to stop the run of the Knights, scoring the final four points of the quarter for the Hawks as they trailed 53-40 entering the final period.

Quincy began the fourth quarter with a dominant performance in the paint. Back-to-back buckets from Rivera and a Sarah Nelson three-point play cut the Knights lead to just five with 5:54 remaining in the game.

Trailing 53-48, the Hawks continued their solid effort, but the Bellarmine offense was just too much. The Knights scored on three straight possessions, and with just under two minutes remaining built an eight-point lead.

The Hawks fell by a final score of 64-57, as Bellarmine made clutch free throws down the stretch to seal the game.
