Women's Basketball Battles Lewis to the Wire

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University women's basketball team faced off with Lewis University for the second time in two weeks on Saturday afternoon (Dec. 12). The Hawks had a chance to tie the game with under ten seconds left but came up short, 68-63. 

Early in the opening quarter, QU trailed by as many as seven points. Quincy responded with a 15-4 run to go ahead of the Flyers, 15-10, with four minutes remaining in the first. 
 
This run helped QU work a 19-19 tie after the first period.

QU's defensive effort made a difference in the second quarter. Quincy held Lewis to 33.3% shooting and forced six turnovers. The Hawks were able to capitalize off the Flyers twelve turnovers in the first half, and they turned those change of possessions into 15 points. 

Through two quarters, Quincy led 31-30, and Jazzpher Evans led the Hawks with 10 points.

Midway through the third quarter, after a pass through traffic from Aleksandra Petrovic landed in the hands of Emma Knipe, Knipe nailed a deep three-pointer to put the Hawks ahead, 46-43.

At the end of the third quarter, Laney Lantz converted on a lay up which was followed by a pair of Flyers' free throws. These two makes from the free throw stripe gave Lewis a one point advantage entering the final period, 53-52.

At the 5:25 mark in the fourth quarter, a three from Jazzpher Evans tied the contest, 59-59. Both teams went scoreless over the next four minutes until a Lewis lay up from Kathryn Schmidt broke the drought.

Lewis proceeded to go on a 7-0 run to pull ahead of the Hawks, 66-59, with 26 seconds remaining.

In the final minute, Lewis left the door open for Quincy after missing four straight free throw attempts. 

The Hawks trailed by just three points with 10 seconds to go and the ball on an inbounds play from half court. On the pass-in, QU had a great look to tie, but Marta Rivera's three-pointer rimed in and out.

The Flyers held on to take down the Hawks by a final score of 68-63.
