Women's Basketball Falls To Winona State In Overtime

QUINCY, Ill. - The Quincy University women's basketball team battled the Winona State Warriors in the championship game of the 2019 Subway Tip-Off Classic on Saturday afternoon (Nov. 23). The Hawks led for a better part of the game, but the Warriors forced overtime and went on to win 73-63.

Three Hawks scored in double figures, led by Ella Gobald. The senior from Australia turned in a double-double performance with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Alexa Low added 15 points and six rebounds, while Aleksandra Petrovic averaged 12 points per game in the tournament to earn All-Tournament recognition.

How It Happened
The Hawks came out firing on all cylinders, as they went 4-5 to start the contest. Alexa Low knocked down two jumpers and Ella Gobald nailed two three-pointers to put QU up 10-5.

The Warriors went on a five-point run to tie the game, but Laney Lantz answered with a jumper in the paint to regain the lead. Both teams went scoreless for the next three minutes before Jessica Merino broke the drought with a shot in a paint, putting Quincy up 14-10.

The teams traded baskets during the final two minutes of the first quarter. Lantz found Amanda Porth for a jump shot with 19 seconds left to give the Hawks a 17-16 lead heading into the second quarter.

Winona State scored four quick points to start the second. Ella Gobald continued to stay hot, getting the crowd on their feet by hitting her third three of the game to tie the score once again.

The Hawks took a five-point lead with four minutes remaining thanks to two free throws by Alexa Low and a deep three-pointer from Aleksandra Petrovic.

The Warriors scored with less than a minute left to cut the Hawks lead to three, 27-24, going into the locker room.

The visiting team turned in five quick points to start the third quarter before Marta Rivera came in the game and made an immediate impact. The freshman from Madrid, Spain dropped in a layup to stop the Warrior run and tie the game.

The score sat tied at 38-38 with 2:10 remaining in the quarter. The Warriors outscored the Hawks 7-2 in the final two minutes, taking a 45-40 lead into the fourth.

QU showed perseverance and grit in the final quarter of regulation. The Hawks came back and took a 49-48 lead on a pull-up jumper by Ella Gobald. 

The home team stretched their lead to six with two minutes remaining after Marta Rivera drained a three and Petrovic found Amanad Porth for a layup.

The Warriors responded by scoring the final six points of the quarter. Catilin Riley hit a three-pointer with 20 seconds left to tie it at 62-62, forcing overtime.

Winona State took control in the overtime period, outscoring QU 11-1 during the five-minute span to take a 73-63 victory.
