QUINCY, Ill. - The Quincy University women's soccer team returned to Legends Stadium to battle Lindenwood on Friday night (Nov. 1).
Lauren Crane scored in the 35
th minute and the Hawks took down the Lions to open up the final weekend of GLVC play.
Grace Hillbing was dribbling the ball on the near sideline and drew a foul. This set up a
Sydney Gorman free kick, which found
Mo Rooney who tapped it to Crane who finished for her third goal of the season.
The Hawks forced the issue early as
Mary Maloney forced Lions keeper
Megan Swanson to make a save in the third minute with a shot on goal. The Lions responded with a strike in the seventh minute, but
Emilee Autry was there to make the save. Autry was tested twice more just one minute later but she made both stops.
Maloney fired another shot for the Hawks in the 13
th minute but Swanson made the save. The Hawks had their first corner kick nine minutes later, but a
Baylee Smith shot went wide of the frame.
Lauren Crane ripped a shot towards the near post in the 27
th minute, and two minutes later she served a corner that resulted in a wide header from
Lexi Porchia and a shot wide by
Paige Anderson. Anderson ripped a free-kick that hit the crossbar as the Hawks had an opportunity just outside the Lions 18-yard box a minute later.
A minute after that, the Hawks were rewarded for their stellar offensive showing as Crane punched in the game-winning goal with just ten minutes left in the first half. Prior to this, the Lions had held opponents scoreless in four of their past five matches.
The Hawks had four shots on goal in the first half, two each from Crane and Maloney.
Lindenwood had a majority of the possession in the opening stages of the second half, but the Hawks back-line blocked three Lions shots in the half's first 20 minutes.
The Lions had shot on goal in the 82
nd minute but Autry made her fifth save of the night to secure a clean sheet for the Hawks.
The Hawks (6-9-1, 5-8-1 GLVC) GLVC-tournament hopes ended tonight as Illinois Springfield earned its 7th GLVC victory, eliminating the Hawks from postseason contention.
The Hawks did force Lindenwood into a must-win situation on Sunday against Truman State as they are 6-7-1, but would need an Illinois Springfield loss as well.
