Hawks Close Out Season With 2-1 Loss To UMSL

QUINCY, Ill. - The Quincy University women's soccer team scored first, but Missouri-St. Louis tallied two second half goals to defeat the Hawks in the regular season finale, 2-1, on Sunday afternoon (Nov. 3).

1st Half
The two teams played an evenly matched first half for the most part, with the Hawks edging the Tritons in shots, 5-4.

The first shot of the game came in the 13th minute from Riley Hayes. The junior got on the end of a corner kick but her shot missed wide right.

Quincy's next chance came on another corner kick in the 24th minute. Paige Anderson sent a header towards the goal, but the shot was denied by the crossbar.

The QU defense stayed tight during the opening half, as all four shots by UMSL missed the frame.

The Hawks broke through just in the nick of time. Sydney Gorman sent a free kick into the box from near midfield with 15 seconds remaining in the half. Senior Baylee Smith ran under the ball and headed it past the UMSL goalie to put QU up 1-0 going into halftime.

2nd Half
The physicality picked up in the second half, as the Hawks and Tritons combined for 19 fouls.

Nearly twenty minutes passed in the half before the first shot was taken. That shot went in favor of UMSL, as Courtney Schreiber got behind the QU defense and scored to even the match at 1-1.

The Tritons only shot the ball two more times the rest of the way. The visiting team's final shot was saved by Emma Vaughn who stopped the ball just before it crossed the goal line. A scramble in the box ensued, and the ball found the back of the net for UMSL after a Hawk defender deflected it into the goal in the 73rd minute.

That 2-1 score stood as Quincy's final two shots were blocked.
