Hawks Split With NAIA #1 Missouri Baptist

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's volleyball team won the opener of a nonconference doubleheader on Tuesday (Feb. 8) night, defeating NAIA No. 1 Missouri Baptist in straight sets, 25-17, 25-19, 25-14, before falling in four, 23-25, 25-16, 25-16, 25-22, in the nightcap in St. Louis.
 
Statistics for the first match were not readily available on Tuesday evening.
 
In the second match of the night, the Hawks (5-9) were not able to slow down a potent Missouri Baptist (11-0) attack that hit. 373 on the night. The Spartans also finished with nine aces.
 
The Hawks matched the Spartans offensively in Set 1, hitting .333 on the way to a 25-23 set win. Junior Jarrod Kelso (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby) had four kills on six swings in the first set. He would finish in a tie for the team high with nine kills in the match.
 
Missouri Baptist took command of the match in the next two games, holding the Hawks to .045 and .100 hitting percentages, respectively. Meanwhile, the Hawks had no answer for Mico Janicijevic, who finished with a match-high 23 kills (.486) and six digs.
 
The Hawks rebounded slightly in Set 4, hitting .400 as a team, but the Spartans were firing on all cylinders, hitting at a .469 clip with 17 kills and just two errors.
 
Kelso (.353) and senior Chris Chappelle (Los Angeles, Calif./Westchester/San Diego City) led the Hawks with nine kills apiece. Chappelle hit .444 in the match with just one error and 18 attacks. Freshman Kolbie Knorr (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton Warrenville South) led the back row with eight digs. Senior Jack Gamache (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell Central) added seven kills.
 
The Hawks will now make a long flight to Phoenix for a MIVA two-day series with Grand Canyon on Friday and Saturday (Feb. 12-13). QU's split squad will also play a match on Friday (Feb. 12) at 7 p.m. against Hannibal-LaGrange at Pepsi Arena.
