50 Years of Quincy Men's Soccer: 1984-93

This is the third in a series of five articles chronicling the first 50 years of Quincy University men's soccer. Each article will feature one decade of the program's history. This installment takes a look at the first decade from 1984 to 1993.

The Hawks started their third decade by making the move from the NAIA level to NCAA Division I and increased their win total by four games from the previous season to finish the year 8-8-2 against a strong big-school schedule. Quincy won five straight games after opening the season 0-2 with wins over New Mexico, Truman State and Washington University. The Hawks also tied traditional power Creighton, 0-0.

Quincy struggled through the 1985 season, finishing with a 3-14-2 record with the wins coming over Truman State, Creighton and Western Illinois. The Hawks rebounded in 1986 with an 11-6-2 record.

In 1987, the Hawks joined the Big Central Soccer Conference with SIU-Edwardsville, Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Marquette and Northern Illinois. The Hawks tied atop the league standings with SIUE with a 2-0-2 record. Overall, the Hawks finished with a 13-4-2 mark – their most wins in five seasons.

Quincy returned in 1988 and celebrated their 25th season by winning the conference championship with a 5-1 record in league play and a 12-6-2 mark overall. The Hawks secured their first conference title with a 3-1 late-season win over SIU-Edwardsville, which was 4-2 – their only losses coming to Quincy.

The Hawks had another strong season in 1989 with a 12-8-1 record with a 3-3 mark in Big Central play.

Quincy reeled off four straight wins to start the 1990 season – their final in the Big Central Conference – but finished on a downslide and finished with a 7-11 record.

In 1991, the Hawks played as an independent and went 6-7-4, but finished the season on a 4-1-1 roll. They closed the year with a 2-1 win against Western Illinois and a 2-0 triumph over SIUE.

Once again, the Hawks finished strong in 1992 when they ended up with a 9-7-2 overall record. They were 4-0-1 in their last five games, including a 6-1 win over Northwestern.

In 1993, the Hawks once again finished with a six-game winning streak and returned to the 13-win plateau with a 13-6 overall record. The Hawks allowed just five goals in their wins and opened the season with four straight shutout wins.
