50 Years of Quincy Men's Soccer: 1974-83

This is the second in a series of five articles chronicling the first 50 years of Quincy University men's soccer. Each article will feature one decade of the program's history. This installment takes a look at the first decade from 1974 to 1983.

After collecting 124 wins and four national championships in the first 10 years of Quincy men's soccer, the Hawks followed it up with 10 more historic years as a powerhouse of the sport in the Midwest under head coach Jack Mackenzie.

The Hawks won their second straight national championship in 1974 with a 17-2-1 record. Quincy dropped its first game of the season, 3-2, to Lewis, but came back to win eight straight games. The Hawks were stout defensively, allowing more than one goal in a game just two times on the season. They rolled through the national tournament en route to the title, outscoring their opponents, 27-2, in their four tournament games. They knocked off perennial contender Davis & Elkins, 6-0, in the title game.

In 1975, the Hawks became the first team in NAIA men's soccer history to win three straight national titles by defeating Simon Fraser in a close battle, 1-0. The Hawks were 19-1-1 and started the year with a 12-game winning streak after ending 1974 on a seven-game streak.

The Hawks once again got on a late-season roll in 1976, reeling off 10 straight victories, the last four coming in the NAIA playoffs. Quincy was finally beaten in the national semifinal by Simon Fraser, 2-1, in 14 overtimes. The teams played a total of 221 minutes, 43 seconds, but the school from British Columbia came out on top with a sudden victory goal.

In 1977, the Hawks started an unprecedented run of national championships by going 19-3. They did not allow a goal in any of their six tournament games and rolled Keene State, 3-0, in the national championship. That was also the final game of a 42-game streak in which the Hawks scored at least one goal – a school record that still stands.

The next year, the Hawks moved to a new home facility from Q Stadium to North Campus Field, just west of the former Our Lady of Angels Seminary on Seminary Road. The final piece of sod was added to the field in July of 1978. The Hawks went 9-1 in their first season on the new surface and won a second straight title by defeating Alabama-Huntsville, 3-1. That followed a tight 3-2 win over Davis & Elkins in the national semifinal.

Quincy endured a rough stretch in 1979 in which the Hawks went 4-5-3, but rallied in time for the NAIA tournament as they reeled off six straight wins in the postseason to claim a third straight national title with a 1-0 win over rival Rockhurst.

The Hawks went 5-6-2 in their first 13 games in 1980 and it looked like a fourth straight national title might not be possible, but Quincy won its final 12 games (allowing just four goals in the process) on the way to the championship. Quincy became the first men's soccer team in NAIA history to win four straight national championships.

Quincy made it five straight titles in 1981 by going 21-3-1 and rolling through the national tournament, defeating Alderson-Broaddus, 4-1, for the championship. The Hawks are still the only men's soccer team in NAIA history to win five straight national championships.

The Hawks went on another late-season run in 1982, winning nine straight games, but they eventually fell in the national tournament to Belhaven, 2-1, to stop their national championship run at five.

Quincy stumbled in 1983, finishing below .500 for the first time in 20 seasons. The Hawks opened the district playoffs with a 3-0 win over Roosevelt, but fell to Illinois Springfield, 1-0, in the next round.

Another decade of Quincy men's soccer and another seven championships were added to the school annals.
