QUINCY, Ill. - Momentum is on the side of the Quincy University women's soccer team.
After opening Great Lakes Valley Conference play with a statement victory over a nationally ranked opponent on Sunday, the Hawks return home Wednesday afternoon looking to carry that energy into another important conference matchup against the University of Indianapolis.
Quincy will host the Greyhounds on Wednesday, September 9, with kickoff scheduled for noon at Legends Stadium. The match will mark the Hawks' second GLVC contest of the season and their first conference home match of 2026.
The Hawks enter Wednesday's contest at 1-1-2 overall and 1-0 in conference play after rallying past No. 22 McKendree, 2-1, on Sunday. The victory was Quincy's first of the season and came against a McKendree team that entered the match with a 4-0 record.
It was also the type of win that can change the momentum of a season.
A Statement Win to Open Conference Play
Quincy faced an early challenge against McKendree, falling behind 1-0 after the Bearcats scored early. Instead of allowing the deficit to become the story of the match, the Hawks came out of halftime with an entirely different level of attacking pressure.
Sophomore forward Abbie Martin was at the center of the comeback.
The quick two-goal burst completely changed the complexion of the match, and Martin's second goal ultimately stood as the game-winner. Behind Martin's performance, the Hawks held off a strong McKendree attack for the remainder of the match. Goalkeeper Devin Tracy came up with five saves as she defended the goal for 90 minutes.
The final numbers showed just how competitive the match was. Both teams finished with 13 shots and six shots on goal, but Quincy was able to make its opportunities count when it mattered most. The Hawks produced eight shots in the second half after recording five before halftime.
Now, the Hawks get the opportunity to bring that confidence back home.
Quincy's Attack Continues to Take Shape
Through the opening four matches of the season, Quincy has already shown that it has several different players capable of making an impact in the attacking third.
Senior Rebecca Rheinheimer continues to be one of the team's biggest offensive threats. Rheinheimer entered conference play with two goals and 13 shots through Quincy's first three games, and she remains one of the players Indianapolis will need to keep an eye on.
Through four matches, Rheinheimer remains among the team's leaders with two goals, while Martin's two-goal performance against McKendree moved her into a tie for the team lead. Marina Oberschmid has also found the net this season, scoring against Davenport, while Jessie Newton has already contributed two assists.
Newton has been especially active in helping create chances, entering Wednesday's match with eight shots and two assists. She also recorded four shots in Sunday's victory over McKendree.
The Hawks have totaled five goals through four matches and have put 20 shots on goal. Their ability to create opportunities has been evident throughout the season, particularly in a 2-2 draw against Davenport when Quincy finished with a 20-13 advantage in shots.
The Hawks will look to bring that same attacking mentality into Wednesday's matchup.
Defensively, Tracy has provided a steady presence in goal. The sophomore has started all four matches and made five saves against McKendree after recording four against Pittsburg State and six against Davenport. She currently has 18 saves on the season.
A Familiar Matchup
The matchup with Indianapolis brings plenty of history with it.
According to UIndy's official game notes, Wednesday's contest will be the 28th meeting between the two programs, with the Greyhounds holding a narrow 10-9-8 advantage in the all-time series.
The Hawks defeated the Greyhounds 2-0 at Key Stadium in the teams' most recent meeting in 2025. Indianapolis won the previous matchup between the schools in 2024, taking a 4-0 decision in Quincy. The 2023 meeting tied with the Greyhounds 1-1 in Indianapolis.
That history gives the Hawks plenty of reason to be motivated heading into Wednesday's contest.
Under second-year head coach Taylor Reis, the Hawks are coming off a breakthrough 2025 season in which they finished 10-4-4 overall and 9-2-3 in GLVC play. Quincy finished fourth in the conference standings and earned the opportunity to host a GLVC Tournament quarterfinal for the first time since 2018.
The Hawks were picked fifth in this year's GLVC preseason coaches' poll, setting the stage for another season in which Quincy expects to compete near the top of the conference.
Wednesday provides an early opportunity to show that Sunday's win was more than just one big afternoon.
Scouting Indianapolis
Indianapolis enters Wednesday's game at 0-2 after dropping its first two games of the 2026 season.
The Greyhounds opened the year with a 2-1 loss at Ohio Dominican before falling 5-0 at Rockhurst in their GLVC opener Saturday. Despite the difficult start, Indianapolis has players capable of creating problems for the Quincy defense.
Kate O'Neill scored Indianapolis' lone goal of the season in the opener against Ohio Dominican, with Nicole Schroeder providing the assist. O'Neill currently leads the Greyhounds with one goal and two points, while Schroeder has recorded one assist.
Mia Bajic is another player to watch. The sophomore forward recorded a team-high three shots in the season opener and added a pair of shots on goal against Rockhurst. Freshman Emma Simpson also recorded multiple shots on goal in Saturday's conference opener.
In goal, redshirt junior Samaya Hogg has already been tested heavily. She made seven saves in the opener against Ohio Dominican and then produced a career-high 10 saves against Rockhurst while facing 15 shots on goal.
That experience could be important against a Quincy attack that has shown a willingness to put shots on frame.
Indianapolis has been led into its first season under head coach Nick Smith, who was hired in December 2025 after spending the previous three seasons as the head coach at Concordia University Nebraska. Smith compiled a 40-13-9 record at Concordia and led the Bulldogs to their first national postseason victory in program history.
Smith is joined on the UIndy staff by assistant coaches Stephanie Brady and Sarah Doyle.
For Quincy, Reis enters his second season as head coach alongside assistant coach Jeweleen Reuille and graduate assistant Lauren Hoolahan. Reis' first season at the helm produced one of the strongest seasons in recent program history, and the Hawks will look to continue that progression as conference play unfolds.
Another Test in the GLVC
The timing of Wednesday's game makes it particularly important.
With the GLVC schedule now underway, every result begins to carry additional weight. Quincy already has one conference win in the bank after Sunday's victory at McKendree, and another strong performance against Indianapolis could give the Hawks an early two-game winning streak and a strong position in the conference race.
The Hawks will also benefit from returning to their home field.
After spending Sunday afternoon battling a nationally ranked McKendree team on the road, Quincy gets to bring its momentum back to Legends Stadium. The Hawks opened the season with two draws at home against Purdue Northwest and Davenport before traveling to Pittsburg State and McKendree.
Now, they get another opportunity in front of the home crowd.
The Hawks have already shown the ability to respond to adversity, coming back from an early deficit Sunday to knock off McKendree. They have produced multiple dangerous attacking options, received strong goalkeeping from Tracy and demonstrated throughout the early season that they can control stretches of play and generate scoring opportunities.
Wednesday's matchup against Indianapolis offers another chance to put all of those pieces together.
For a Quincy team that entered the season looking to build on its breakthrough 2025 campaign, the early portion of the GLVC schedule is providing exactly the kind of challenge that can define a season.
The Hawks have already made a statement on the road.
Now, they get the chance to make another one at home.
Quincy and Indianapolis will meet Wednesday, September 9, at Legends Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 12:00 PM. With the Hawks coming off their first victory of the season and first GLVC win, the anticipation surrounding the return home should be high as Quincy looks to keep the momentum rolling and continue its push toward the top of the conference.
