Box Score KANSAS CITY, MO - Quincy University men's soccer battled Rockhurst University to a scoreless draw Saturday afternoon at Bourke Field, with both teams putting together chances throughout the 90 minutes but neither finding the back of the net.
The match tied 0-0, with Quincy goalkeeper Jake Offerman recording a clean sheet after making one save. Quincy finished with eight total shots, including two on goal, while Rockhurst recorded seven shots with one on target.
Quincy created some of its best opportunities during the opening half. Leo Cann registered two shots during the first 45 minutes, including a low attempt in the 12th minute that Rockhurst goalkeeper Luke Strueby saved. Cann later put another shot just wide of the right side in the 23rd minute as the Hawks continued to pressure the Rockhurst defense.
Rockhurst created its own opportunities as the half progressed. Troy Lor had a shot blocked in the eighth minute, while Elijah Riese put a low attempt on target in the eighth minute that was saved by Offerman.
The final minutes of the first half saw Quincy generate another stretch of offensive pressure. Sean Sossou put a shot wide in the 39th minute before Rodrigo Bandeira had an attempt blocked following a Quincy free. Quincy also earned a corner kick late in the half, but Rockhurst's defense kept the match scoreless heading into halftime.
Quincy made several substitutions at the start of the second half as the Hawks continued looking for a breakthrough. Erik Abraham created an early opportunity in the 55th minute, sending a shot high, while Rockhurst's Lor answered with another shot that went high in the 49th minute.
The Hawks continued to apply pressure as the half progressed. Quincy earned multiple free kicks and a corner kick in the middle portion of the half, and Lucca Barbero had a shot blocked in the 66th minute. Cann then put another attempt high in the 70th minute before Rylan Fischer tested Strueby with a low shot toward the left side. Strueby made the save to keep the match tied.
Rockhurst continued to threaten as the second half moved into its final 20 minutes. Liam Dean sent a shot high in the 72nd minute, while Connor Gaarder followed with another high attempt in the 85th minute. Sam McIntosh came closest to breaking the deadlock late in regulation when his shot struck the left post in the 89th minute.
The Quincy defense held firm during the closing minutes, and Offerman and the Hawks secured the shutout as the match ended 0-0.
Quincy finished with eight shots to Rockhurst's seven and held a 2-1 edge in shots on goal. The Hawks also recorded three corner kicks compared to five for Rockhurst.
Cann led Quincy with three shots, including one on goal, while Barbero and Fischer each recorded a shot on target. Offerman played all 90 minutes in goal and made the lone save.
The result gives Quincy another hard-fought result in conference play, as the Hawks continued to battle through a physical match on the road at Rockhurst. The Quincy defense limited Rockhurst to just one shot on target over the full 90 minutes, while the Hawks created several opportunities of their own but could not find the deciding finish.
Conference play will continue for Quincy as they host a home match against the University of Illinois Springfield on Wednesday, September 23rd with a kickoff time of 7:30 PM.
