Hawks Snap Seven-Game Losing Skid with Win Over William Jewell

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University women's lacrosse team snapped its seven-game losing skid on Sunday afternoon with a 14-7 victory over the Cardinals at QU Stadium. Quincy pulled away in the second half after leading by just two at halftime, outscoring William Jewell 8-3 over the final 30 minutes.

The Hawks struck first just 1:31 into the game when Elise Bruggeman scored off an assist from Amelia Ham. William Jewell answered to tie the game at 1-1 before Alaina Wilkinson gave Quincy the lead back with a man-up goal, again assisted by Ham. Wilkinson added a free-position goal less than a minute later to put the Hawks ahead 3-1, but William Jewell scored late in the opening quarter to make it 3-2 after one.

William Jewell tied the game just 13 seconds into the second quarter, but Quincy responded with three unanswered goals. Emily Leal scored off a Ham assist, Jaynie Chatman found the back of the net off a Wilkinson assist, and Anni Moran added a free-position goal to give the Hawks a 6-3 advantage. The Cardinals added a late goal before halftime, but Quincy still held a 6-4 lead at the break.

The third quarter proved to be the turning point. William Jewell twice cut the deficit to one, but Quincy answered each time. Amelia Ham scored to make it 7-5, Wilkinson followed with back-to-back goals, and Amelia Ham closed the quarter with a goal off a Wilkinson assist with 15 seconds left to give the Hawks a 10-6 advantage entering the fourth.

Quincy continued to pull away in the final quarter. Chatman opened the scoring before Moran converted a man-up opportunity off a Wilkinson assist. Wilkinson then added another man-up goal, assisted by Amelia Ham, before scoring her sixth goal of the day to cap the Hawks' scoring at 14-6. William Jewell scored once late, but Quincy secured the 14-7 win.

The Hawks dominated statistically, outshooting William Jewell 34-16 and holding a 23-12 advantage in ground balls. Quincy also forced 25 turnovers while committing just 15 and converted 2-of-4 free-position opportunities. The Hawks were also strong in the clearing game, successfully clearing 16 of 18 attempts.

Wilkinson led the Hawks with six goals and three assists for nine points while also recording a career-high five ground balls. Amelia Ham finished with two goals and four assists, surpassing both 250 career points and 100 career assists. She becomes the first player in program history to reach the 100-assist milestone and also added a career-high four ground balls.

Chatman and Moran each scored twice, while Leal and Bruggeman also added goals. Leal finished with four caused turnovers, while Mikenna Ham controlled five draws and added a caused turnover. Madison Whiting Wagner recorded five saves in the win.

The Hawks will now face a top-10 program in the country on Friday, April 17, when they travel to St. Louis to take on Maryville University. Opening draw is scheduled for 12:00 PM.
