Xochitl Mota-Pettis has been named the QU Toyota Star of the Week after a dominant performance at the inaugural NCAA Women's Wrestling National Championships, where she captured the 124-pound national title and made history for the Hawks.
Entering the national tournament as the No. 3 seed and the No. 3-ranked wrestler in the nation, Mota-Pettis delivered a flawless performance, going 4-0 with two technical falls and one pin, earning 25.5 team points while defeating three nationally ranked opponents on her way to the championship.
Mota-Pettis opened the tournament with a statement victory, defeating Laura Alcantar Soto of Simon Fraser by technical fall (12-1, 3:12) in the opening round. She followed that performance with an even more decisive win in the quarterfinals, pinning No. 6 seed and No. 9 nationally ranked Savannah Witt of Eastern in 4:33 to advance to the semifinals.
In the semifinals, Mota-Pettis faced another highly ranked opponent in No. 7 seed and No. 5 nationally ranked Lorianna Piestewa of Colorado Mesa. The Hawks' standout continued her dominant run, earning a 10-0 technical fall in just 1:29 to secure her spot in the national championship match.
The championship bout saw Mota-Pettis take on No. 4 seed and No. 7 nationally ranked Shelby Moore of McKendree, and the outcome left little doubt. Wrestling with control from start to finish, Mota-Pettis secured a 10-0 technical fall (5:49) to claim the national championship, completing one of the most dominant tournament runs in the field.
The title marked a historic milestone for Quincy University, as Mota-Pettis became just the second individual national champion in school history across all sports.
Her national championship capped off an impressive season after transferring to Quincy midway through the year. Mota-Pettis finished the season 11-1 overall, recording four falls and five technical falls while consistently overpowering opponents.
She also posted a 4-1 dual record, including a 2-0 mark in GLVC competition, while scoring 18 dual points for the Hawks. Along the way, Mota-Pettis collected five victories over nationally ranked opponents, earned GLVC Second Team All-Conference honors, and claimed the Region V Championship at 124 pounds.
Her championship performance came during a landmark season for women's wrestling, as the NCAA hosted its inaugural national championship for the sport. Mota-Pettis not only helped Quincy to a top-10 team finish but also cemented her name in program history with a title that will be remembered for years to come.
In a season filled with milestones for both the program and the sport, Mota-Pettis delivered the ultimate exclamation point, standing atop the podium as a national champion.
