SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Quincy's three-game winning streak came to an end Thursday night, as the Hawks fell 64–56 to Drury University at the O'Reilly Family Event Center. Turnovers proved costly for Quincy, which committed 19 giveaways that the Panthers converted into 25 points, as a late fourth-quarter rally came up just short.
The Hawks struggled to settle in early, turning the ball over on their first five possessions as Drury jumped out to a 5–0 lead in the opening three minutes. Quincy found a spark off the bench from
Hayven Harden and
Reagan Reed, trimming the deficit to 9–8 midway through the quarter.
Quincy briefly evened the score at 12–12, but a 4–0 spurt from Rhi Gibbons pushed Drury ahead 16–12 after one. Neither team shot efficiently in the opening frame, but eight first-quarter turnovers loomed large for the Hawks.
Quincy opened the second quarter on a 9–2 run, shooting 4-of-5 from the field to grab its first lead of the night at 21–18. Drury responded with a 6–0 run as the Hawks went scoreless for nearly three minutes.
A triple from
Hampton Williams and a late basket from Reed helped Quincy pull even, but a buzzer-beating layup by the Panthers sent the teams into halftime tied at 26. Despite holding Drury to 4-of-14 shooting in the quarter, QU committed five more turnovers before the break.
Drury delivered its best offensive stretch of the game in the third, opening the period on a 10–4 run while capitalizing on five additional Quincy turnovers. Reed and Harden continued to provide energy off the bench, keeping the Hawks within striking distance at 39–36 with just over three minutes remaining.
The final minutes swung momentum firmly in Drury's favor, as the Panthers closed the quarter on a 9–2 run to take a 48–38 lead into the fourth. Quincy shot 50 percent in the period but went 0-for-4 from deep, allowing Drury to pull away.
The Panthers extended their lead to as many as 16 early in the fourth, but Quincy answered with a critical 9–0 run. A three-pointer from
Blair Eftink capped the surge, cutting the deficit to seven with five minutes to play.
Quincy continued to chip away, and a
Karly Peters triple pulled the Hawks within two at 60–56 with under two minutes remaining. The Hawks forced a turnover out of a Drury timeout, but missed free throws and empty possessions down the stretch stalled the comeback. Drury sealed the game at the line, closing on a 4-for-4 stretch to secure the 64–56 win.
Quincy shot 49.0 percent from the field compared to Drury's 41.8 percent, while both teams struggled from beyond the arc. The decisive difference came at the free-throw line, where Drury went 15-of-19 compared to Quincy's 4-of-10.
The Hawks held a 32–29 rebounding advantage but were undone by 19 turnovers that led to 25 Panther points.
Peters led Quincy with 14 points, marking her seventh double-figure scoring effort of the season, while adding five rebounds and two steals. Reed and Harden each chipped in 10 points off the bench, with Harden finishing a perfect 5-for-5 from the field and pushing her season shooting percentage above 70 percent.
For Drury, reigning GLVC Player of the Week Sara Mendel posted 21 points on 9-of-11 shooting and grabbed 10 rebounds for her conference-leading 15th double-double of the season. Gibbons and Kaylee King each found themselves in double figures as well.
Quincy will look to bounce back Saturday against Missouri S&T. The Hawks defeated the Miners 74–67 earlier this season at Pepsi Arena. Tipoff is set for 1:00 PM at Gibson Arena.
