Hawks Split Twinbill with Davenport; Conrad Tosses Complete Game in Nightcap Victory

QUINCY, Ill. – Quincy University opened a four-game series with Davenport University on Friday by splitting a doubleheader. The Panthers powered their way to a 19-9 win in game one before freshman Rocco Conrad delivered a dominant complete-game effort to lead the Hawks to an 11-1 victory in game two.

Game 1 – Davenport 19, Quincy 9

After a scoreless first inning, Davenport broke through with five hits in the second to score three runs, then added a two-run homer in the third to build a 5-0 lead. A wild pitch in the fourth extended the margin before Harry Fandre put the Hawks on the board with an RBI double to left-center.

The Panthers continued to capitalize on miscues in the fifth, plating three runs, but Joe Huffman answered with a solo home run to make it 9-2 after five innings.

Davenport added two more runs in the sixth, but Quincy responded with a seven-run explosion in the bottom half. Payton Mansfield opened the inning with a towering home run in his season debut, and freshman Ari Fivelson followed with a three-run blast, his team-leading fourth of the year. Huffman capped the rally with his second homer of the game, driving in three to pull the Hawks within 11-9.

After a scoreless seventh, the Panthers pulled away with three runs in the eighth and five in the ninth, including two three-run homers, to secure the 19-9 final

The teams combined for 34 hits. Davenport catcher Dylan Pawesnki led the Panthers with four hits and seven RBIs, while Justin Johnson added three hits and four RBIs. Quincy's top seven hitters all recorded multiple hits, led by Huffman's two home runs and four RBIs. Ben Dahlof added three hits, but the Hawks stranded 13 runners.

Game 2 – Quincy 11, Davenport 1

Quincy wasted no time taking control in the nightcap, scoring five runs in the first inning. Isaiah Fudge drove in the opening run with a single, Byron Blaise added a two-run double, and David Broughton capped the frame with a two-run homer.

Blaise drove in another run with a sacrifice fly in the third, and a Davenport error pushed the lead to 7-0. The Panthers scored their lone run on an RBI single in the fourth.

The Hawks added four insurance runs in the sixth, highlighted by Carson Moreno's fourth home run of the season and RBI hits from Huffman and Mansfield.

The offensive support was more than enough for Conrad, who delivered the standout performance of the day. In just his second collegiate start, the freshman threw a complete game, allowing one run on four hits while striking out seven and walking three.

Quincy collected 10 hits in game two. Jace Figuereo and Huffman each posted multi-hit efforts, while Huffman extended his hitting streak to seven games. Blaise drove in three runs to raise his team-leading RBI total to 20, and both Fudge and Broughton extended their hitting streaks to seven games.

The Hawks and Panthers will continue the series Saturday with another doubleheader beginning at 12:00 PM.
