UMSL Defense Stifles Hawks on Senior Day, Quincy Falls 73-53

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy women's basketball team dropped a tough home contest to GLVC-leading Missouri–St. Louis, falling 73-53 Sunday afternoon inside Pepsi Arena on Senior Day. The Tritons' league-best defense proved its dominance, holding the Hawks to 32.1 percent shooting while securing their 20th victory of the season.

Following the game, Quincy honored its senior class of Acheampomaa Danso, Sydney Runsewe, and Hampton Williams for their contributions to the program.

Both offenses came out firing as the Hawks jumped to an early 10-5 lead behind a pair of three-pointers in the opening two minutes. Missouri–St. Louis answered with a decisive 13-0 run over the next five minutes to take an 18-10 advantage.

Williams connected on a jumper in the final two minutes, the only points scored during that stretch, as the Tritons carried an 18-12 lead after one quarter. UMSL shot an efficient 7-for-11 from the field, while Quincy cooled after its hot start, finishing 4-for-13.

The teams traded baskets through the first five minutes, but Quincy was unable to cut into the deficit as UMSL led 26-19 midway through the period.

The Tritons stretched the margin to double digits with just under two minutes remaining, taking a 35-24 lead into halftime. Quincy shot 3-for-12 in the quarter, while UMSL capitalized at the free-throw line with eight made foul shots to extend the advantage.

The Hawks remained within striking distance early in the third, but the deficit stayed at 11 midway through the period.

UMSL seized control in the final five minutes, closing the quarter on a 12-3 run to build a 54-34 lead. The Tritons shot 6-for-11 in the quarter and controlled the glass with an 11-5 rebounding edge, while Quincy struggled offensively at 3-for-14.

Quincy was unable to generate sustained offense against the Tritons' defensive pressure as the lead swelled to 25 midway through the final quarter.

The Hawks showed a late offensive push, but the early shooting struggles proved too much to overcome as Missouri–St. Louis secured the 73-53 victory.

Quincy shot 32.1 percent from the field compared to 47.9 percent for UMSL. Both teams were efficient from three-point range, with the Tritons hitting 6-of-12 (50%) and the Hawks connecting on 8-of-19 (42.1%). Missouri–St. Louis dominated the rebounding battle 41-24. Quincy committed just nine turnovers compared to 13 by UMSL, but the cold shooting proved decisive.

Hayven Harden led Quincy with 12 points, though she shot 5-of-13 from the field. Karly Peters nearly recorded a double-double with nine points and a season-high eight rebounds. Missouri–St. Louis was paced by Mara Rieder's 21 points and six rebounds. Morgan Ramthun added a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds, while Anna Costa Riera chipped in 16 points.

Quincy will look to bounce back Thursday, February 19, when the Hawks travel to St. Louis to face Maryville. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 PM inside Moloney Arena.
