Hawks Host Southwest Baptist for Senior Day With GLVC Positioning on the Line

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University women's soccer team returns to Legends Stadium on Saturday, October 10, to host Southwest Baptist University in a Great Lakes Valley Conference matchup. Kickoff is scheduled for 12 PM.

Quincy enters the contest with a 4-3-6 overall record and a 4-2-4 mark in GLVC play following a scoreless draw against Maryville on Wednesday.

Southwest Baptist comes to Quincy at 5-6-2 overall and 3-5-1 in conference action. The Bearcats are unbeaten over their last four matches and are coming off a 5-0 victory over William Jewell.

Saturday will also serve as Senior Day for the Hawks, who will honor eight seniors before kickoff while continuing their push for positioning in the GLVC Tournament race.

Last Time Out

Quincy earned another conference point Wednesday night, battling Maryville to a 0-0 draw at Legends Stadium.

The Hawks generated the majority of the opportunities during the opening half, finishing the period with a 4-2 advantage in shots. Rebecca Rheinheimer, Claudia Andreu and Emily Richardson each created chances as Quincy looked for the opening goal, but Maryville goalkeeper Agnes Vilen kept the match scoreless.

The defensive battle continued after halftime, with each side recording four shots over the final 45 minutes. Jessie Newton and Abbie Martin added opportunities for Quincy, but neither team was able to find a breakthrough.

Goalkeeper Libby Kamp made her second consecutive start and turned away both shots she faced to record the shutout. Quincy finished with an 8-6 advantage in shots, while each team put two attempts on goal. Rheinheimer led the Hawks with three shots, including one on target, while Andreu added two attempts.

The result gave Quincy its sixth draw of the season and kept the Hawks firmly in the GLVC postseason race.

Four Matches Remain in Tight GLVC Race

Saturday begins the final four-match stretch of the regular season for Quincy. The Hawks enter the weekend sixth in the GLVC standings with 16 points, tied with Illinois Springfield.

Rockhurst sits fifth with 19 points, while Maryville and Missouri S&T are each on 20 in the race for a top-four position.

The margin behind Quincy is also narrow.

Truman currently occupies eighth place with 15 points, while Lewis sits just outside the GLVC Tournament field in ninth with 13.

The top eight teams qualify for the conference tournament, while the top four seeds earn the opportunity to host an opening-round match.

That leaves Quincy only four points from a top-four position but just three points ahead of the first team currently outside the tournament field.

With Southwest Baptist, Upper Iowa, Lincoln and Truman remaining on the schedule, every point will carry increased importance down the stretch.

Hawks Celebrate Senior Day

Before Saturday's match, Quincy will recognize eight seniors for their contributions to the program.

The Hawks will honor Dache Johnson, Rebecca Rheinheimer, Samantha Giel, Libby Kamp, Abby Jerszynski, Claudia Andreu, Marina Oberschmid and Jessie Newton.

The group has played a major role in Quincy's success both this season and throughout their time in the program. Several members of the senior class also remain central to Quincy's production this year.

Rheinheimer leads the Hawks with seven goals, while Newton has been one of the GLVC's top playmakers with 11 assists.

Oberschmid has added three goals, while Kamp has stepped into the starting goalkeeper role over the last two matches and allowed just one goal across 180 minutes.

Saturday provides the group with an opportunity to celebrate Senior Day while helping Quincy earn three important conference points.

Defense Continues to Set the Tone

Quincy has relied on a consistent defensive effort throughout the season. The Hawks have allowed just 11 goals through 13 matches and have recorded five shutouts.

Quincy has also posted clean sheets in two of its last three matches, shutting out William Jewell and Maryville while allowing only one goal at Drury. Kamp has started each of the last two contests and has made seven saves while surrendering just one goal.

That defense will face a Southwest Baptist attack that has recently found its rhythm after an inconsistent start to the season.

Common Opponents

Quincy and Southwest Baptist have already faced several of the same opponents this season.

Both teams suffered nonconference losses against Pittsburg State, with Quincy falling 1-0 and Southwest Baptist dropping a 3-0 decision. Against Maryville, Quincy earned a scoreless draw while Southwest Baptist lost 3-0.

Both teams also suffered losses against UMSL, with Quincy falling 3-0 and Southwest Baptist dropping a 4-1 result. The Bearcats lost 2-1 to Lewis, while Quincy played the Flyers to a 0-0 draw.

Against Missouri S&T, Southwest Baptist fell 4-3 while Quincy earned a 1-1 result. Both programs defeated Indianapolis, with the Hawks earning a 5-0 victory and Southwest Baptist winning 2-1.

The teams have also recently faced William Jewell. Quincy defeated the Cardinals 4-0 before Southwest Baptist earned a 5-0 victory Wednesday.

Scouting Southwest Baptist

Southwest Baptist enters Saturday playing its best soccer of the season. The Bearcats are 3-0-1 over their last four matches, beginning the stretch with a 2-1 victory over Indianapolis.

SBU followed with a scoreless draw at Truman before defeating Upper Iowa 2-0 and William Jewell 5-0.

The Bearcats have outscored opponents 9-1 during the four-match unbeaten streak and have recorded three consecutive shutouts.

Southwest Baptist's offense erupted Wednesday against William Jewell.

Addi Shuler opened the scoring in the 18th minute off an assist from Juana Fernandez Calvo before Katelynn Young doubled the advantage late in the first half.

The Bearcats wasted little time adding to the lead after halftime.

Caroline Kieffner scored just 26 seconds into the second period before Young added her second goal in the 56th minute. Lydia Fickle capped the scoring five minutes later.

Southwest Baptist finished with a 17-10 advantage in shots and an 11-2 edge in shots on goal. CeCe Alexander and Sydney King combined to secure the shutout.

The Bearcats have scored 23 goals while allowing 19 this season. Fernandez Calvo leads the attack with four goals and five assists.

Addi Shuler has contributed four goals and two assists, while Fickle has added three goals and one assist. Alexander has anchored the defense in goal with 41 saves and has been a key part of the Bearcats' recent run of clean sheets.

Southwest Baptist is led by first-year head coach Debbie Pekel, who joined the program after previously coaching at Spartanburg Methodist College.

Series History

Quincy holds a 10-4-2 advantage in the series against Southwest Baptist. The Hawks earned a 2-0 road victory over the Bearcats last season.

Quincy struck quickly when Rheinheimer scored just over two minutes into the match.

The Hawks carried the 1-0 advantage into halftime before Faith Niebrugge doubled the lead in the 64th minute off an assist from Rheinheimer.

Goalkeeper Devin Tracy turned in a career-best performance, making 10 saves to preserve the shutout.

Quincy finished with 13 shots, including six on goal, and held a 7-5 advantage in corner kicks.

Matchup Outlook

Saturday's matchup features a Quincy team looking to convert strong defensive performances into three points against a Southwest Baptist side entering with considerable momentum.

The Hawks have surrendered just one goal over their last three matches but have scored only once during that same stretch.

Finding an offensive breakthrough will be important against a Bearcats defense that has now recorded three consecutive shutouts.

Southwest Baptist enters having scored seven goals over its last two matches and will look to continue generating opportunities through Fernandez Calvo, Shuler and Fickle.

For Quincy, maintaining its defensive form while finding more consistent production from Rheinheimer, Newton and the rest of the attack will be key.

With only four regular-season matches remaining, Saturday provides the Hawks with an opportunity to celebrate Senior Day, strengthen their GLVC Tournament position and remain within striking distance of a top-four seed.

Kickoff between Quincy and Southwest Baptist is scheduled for 12 PM Saturday at Legends Stadium.
