QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University women's soccer team returns to Legends Stadium on Wednesday, October 7, for a key Great Lakes Valley Conference matchup against Maryville University. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 PM.
Quincy enters the contest with a 4-3-5 overall record and a 4-2-3 mark in GLVC play after earning a 1-1 road draw against Drury on Saturday.
Maryville comes to Quincy at 6-4-2 overall and 6-1-1 in conference action. The Saints have won four consecutive matches and are coming off a 2-1 victory over Rockhurst.
With only five regular-season matches remaining, Wednesday's matchup carries added importance in a tightly packed GLVC race.
Last Time Out
The Hawks earned a road point Saturday, battling Drury to a 1-1 draw in Springfield, Missouri.
Quincy broke through late in the first half when
Marina Oberschmid found the back of the net in the 44th minute off an assist from
Jessie Newton, sending the Hawks into halftime with a 1-0 advantage.
Drury generated the majority of the attacking pressure, finishing with a 14-7 advantage in shots and a 6-2 edge in shots on goal.
Making her first appearance and first start of her collegiate career, goalkeeper
Libby Kamp helped keep Quincy in front for much of the afternoon. Kamp made four saves during the opening half and finished with five while playing all 90 minutes.
The Hawks searched for an insurance goal after halftime with opportunities from
Tori Nelson,
Lucy Thomas,
Abbie Martin and
Rebecca Rheinheimer, but Drury eventually found the equalizer in the 82nd minute.
Neither side was able to break through again as Quincy secured its third draw in conference play.
Saints Bring Four-Match Winning Streak to Quincy
Maryville enters Wednesday as one of the hottest teams in the GLVC. The Saints have won four consecutive matches while scoring 15 goals during that stretch.
Maryville opened the run with an 8-0 victory over Upper Iowa before defeating Missouri S&T 1-0, Indianapolis 4-0 and Rockhurst 2-1.
The Saints' winning streak came immediately after a 2-1 loss to McKendree. Most recently, Maryville rallied from a halftime deficit to defeat Rockhurst.
Ava Ernst leveled the match in the 51st minute off an assist from Sophia Carter before Helene Braren scored the game-winner six minutes later.
Maryville finished with a 12-10 advantage in shots and continued the offensive surge that has moved the Saints toward the top of the conference standings.
Five Matches Remain in Tight GLVC Race
With five regular-season matches remaining, every point carries significant weight for Quincy. UMSL currently leads the conference with 22 points, followed closely by McKendree with 21.
Maryville enters Wednesday in third place with 19 points, while Rockhurst sits fourth with 18 and Missouri S&T fifth with 17. Quincy is directly behind that group in sixth place with 15 points.
The Hawks also have little room for error behind them, with Illinois Springfield and Lewis each sitting on 13 points and Truman holding ninth place with 12.
The top eight teams qualify for the GLVC Tournament, while the top four seeds earn the opportunity to host a first-round match.
That leaves Quincy only three points behind fourth place while also sitting just three points ahead of the current tournament cutoff.
A victory Wednesday would move the Hawks to 18 points and strengthen their push for not only a postseason berth but potentially a home match in the opening round.
Quincy Playmakers Continue to Produce
The Hawks enter Wednesday with 20 goals through 12 matches.
Rheinheimer continues to lead the attack with seven goals and two assists while generating 44 shots, including 21 on goal.
Newton has remained one of the conference's top creators. The senior leads the GLVC with 11 assists while adding two goals and once again played a role in Quincy's scoring Saturday by setting up Oberschmid.
Oberschmid's goal against Drury was her third of the season as she continues to emerge as another attacking option for Quincy in set piece opportunities.
With Maryville entering on a four-match winning streak, the Hawks will look to create more opportunities through Rheinheimer, Newton and a group that has already shown the ability to produce goals from several different positions.
Common Opponents
Quincy and Maryville have already faced several of the same GLVC opponents. The Hawks battled Lewis to a scoreless draw, while Maryville earned a 4-1 victory over the Flyers.

Both teams also posted convincing victories over Indianapolis, with Quincy winning 5-0 and Maryville earning a 4-0 result.
The teams have also faced Rockhurst. Quincy handed Rockhurst its first loss of the season with a 4-0 road victory, while Maryville defeated Rockhurst 2-1 on Saturday.
Series History
Since 2010, Maryville holds a narrow 7-6-4 advantage in the series against Quincy. Last season's meeting at Jack Mackenzie Field ended in a 1-1 draw.

Quincy wasted little time answering after the break.

Matchup Outlook
Wednesday's matchup features two teams with plenty at stake as the GLVC regular season moves into its final five matches.
Quincy will look to build on the road point earned at Drury while finding more consistency in the attacking third.
The Hawks have several proven scoring options in Rheinheimer, Newton and Oberschmid and will need that group to challenge a Maryville side entering with significant momentum.
Maryville will look to extend its four-match winning streak and maintain its place among the conference's top four.
With only four points separating third-place Maryville from sixth-place Quincy, Wednesday provides the Hawks with an opportunity to make a significant move in the standings while continuing their push toward the GLVC Tournament.
Kickoff between Quincy and Maryville is scheduled for 5 PM Wednesday at Legends Stadium.
