QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's soccer team returns to Legends Stadium on Wednesday, October 7, to host Maryville University in a key Great Lakes Valley Conference matchup. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
Quincy enters the contest with a 5-2-5 overall record and a 4-1-4 mark in GLVC play after suffering its first conference loss of the season, a 1-0 setback at No. 10 Drury on Saturday.
Maryville also enters Wednesday looking to rebound from its first conference defeat. The Saints are 8-3-1 overall and 6-1-1 in league play following a 1-0 loss at Rockhurst.
With only five regular-season matches remaining for Quincy, Wednesday's matchup carries significant implications in a tightly contested race near the top of the GLVC standings.
Last Time Out
The Hawks battled nationally ranked Drury for 90 minutes Saturday but were unable to find a breakthrough in a 1-0 road loss.
Quincy generated five first-half shots and earned three corner kicks as the teams went into halftime scoreless.
Josh Nwosu produced the Hawks' best opportunity of the opening half, forcing a save from Drury goalkeeper Ben Barnett in the 31st minute.
Rylan Fischer added two first-half attempts, while
Colin Kurk also tested the Panthers' defense.
On the other end, goalkeeper
Jake Offerman helped keep the match level with two first-half saves as Quincy limited Drury to four shots before the break.
The Panthers finally broke through in the 77th minute when Sigurdur Thorisson scored off an assist from Steen Voller.
Quincy continued searching for an equalizer before the Hawks were dealt another challenge in the closing moments when Offerman received a red card.
Max Frericks entered in goal for the final 1:12 as Quincy finished the match with 10 players.
The Hawks ended the contest with eight shots, one on goal and five corner kicks, while Offerman made three saves.
Hawks Turn to Frericks in Goal
Offerman's red card means Quincy will be without its starting goalkeeper against Maryville, creating another significant storyline entering Wednesday's matchup.
Offerman has started each of Quincy's last 11 matches and has been one of the anchors of a defense that has allowed just nine goals all season. He enters the week with 27 saves, five shutouts, and a 0.64 goals-against average.
With Offerman unavailable, Frericks is in line to make his second start of the season. The redshirt sophomore has already been called upon once in a similar situation.
Frericks made his collegiate debut and first career start in Quincy's season opener at Parkside when Offerman was unavailable due to injury. He faced eight shots on goal and made six saves in the 2-1 loss.
Frericks returned to the field for the first time since that opener Saturday at Drury, playing the final 1:12 after Offerman's ejection.
Through his two appearances, Frericks has played 91:12 in goal and recorded six saves. Wednesday will present a significant test against a Maryville offense averaging 2.5 goals per match.
Both Sides Looking to Respond
Wednesday brings together two teams coming off their first conference losses of the season.
Quincy entered Saturday unbeaten through its first eight GLVC matches before falling to nationally ranked Drury. Maryville's first conference loss came under very different circumstances.
The Saints dominated much of the statistical battle against Rockhurst, finishing with a 23-3 advantage in shots, a 10-2 edge in shots on goal and a 12-2 advantage in corner kicks, but surrendered a goal in the 10th minute and were unable to find an equalizer.
Both teams will look to quickly regain momentum with the conference race entering its most important stretch.
Five Matches Remain in Tight GLVC Race
Quincy enters Wednesday sitting directly in the final position that would earn a home GLVC Tournament quarterfinal.
Drury and Maryville are tied atop the standings with 19 points, while Lincoln follows closely behind with 17. Quincy sits fourth with 16 points, just three behind the conference leaders.
The margin behind the Hawks is even tighter.
Indianapolis and Missouri S&T each have 15 points, while Rockhurst and Truman sit on 12. UMSL follows with 11. The top eight teams qualify for the GLVC Tournament, while the top four seeds host the opening round.
With five regular-season matches remaining, Quincy sits just three points from the top of the league but only one point ahead of fifth place.
A victory Wednesday would move the Hawks to 19 points and pull them even with Maryville's current total while strengthening Quincy's position in the race for a home postseason match.
Maryville Attack Meets Quincy Defense
One of Wednesday's biggest matchups will feature Maryville's high-powered attack against a Quincy defense that has been difficult to break down throughout the season.
The Saints have scored 30 goals through 12 matches, averaging 2.5 per contest while generating 187 shots.
Quincy has allowed only nine goals through 12 matches and has held opponents to fewer than 10 shots per game.
Offerman continues to anchor the defense with 27 saves, five shutouts, and a 0.64 goals-against average. The Hawks have also been especially difficult to score against during conference play.
Offensively, however, Quincy will be looking to find more consistency. The Hawks have been shut out in four of their last five matches, with all four of their goals during that stretch coming in a 4-2 victory over Illinois Springfield.
Leo Cann continues to lead the Quincy attack with seven goals and three assists, while Nwosu has four goals and two assists, and
Mathias Bringedal has added three goals and two assists.
Wednesday will provide the Hawks an opportunity to get the attack back on track against one of the league's top teams.
Common Opponents
Quincy and Maryville have already faced several of the same conference opponents.
Both teams defeated Lewis, with Quincy earning a 3-1 victory and Maryville posting a 4-1 result.
Against McKendree, Quincy earned a 2-0 win while Maryville defeated the Bearcats 2-1. The Saints defeated Indianapolis 2-0, while Quincy battled the Greyhounds to a 1-1 draw.
Both teams also picked up victories over Missouri S&T. Quincy defeated the then-No. 13 Miners 1-0, while Maryville earned a 2-1 win.
The teams have also faced Rockhurst. Quincy battled Rockhurst to a scoreless draw earlier this season, while Maryville suffered its first conference loss against the Hawks on Saturday.
Series History
Since 2010, Maryville holds a 9-7-1 advantage in the series against Quincy. The Saints have won the last eight meetings, with Quincy's most recent victory coming during the 2016 season.
Last year's meeting at Legends Stadium ended in a 2-1 Maryville victory. The Saints opened the scoring in the 27th minute and carried the advantage into halftime.
Quincy found the equalizer in the 58th minute when
Ismael Allimadi scored off an assist from
Carlos Moreno Henao.
The match remained tied until the 84th minute, when Jacob Lund-Iversen found the game-winner for Maryville.
Both teams finished with 11 shots, while Maryville held a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks. Offerman made three saves in the loss.
Scouting Maryville
Despite Saturday's setback, Maryville remains one of the GLVC's most dangerous teams. The Saints have scored 30 goals while allowing 13 through 12 matches.
Their offensive production has come from throughout the lineup.
Omar Cilic leads Maryville with five goals, while Ahmed Suljagic has added four. Axton Anom, Julian Stoecker and Petter Hanssen have each scored three goals, giving the Saints several players capable of creating problems in the attacking third.
In goal, Asgrimur Vidisson has recorded 43 saves and three shutouts.
Maryville is coming off a 2025 season in which it finished 12-6-2, captured the GLVC Tournament championship and advanced to the NCAA Tournament.
The Saints reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament before their season ended in a penalty-kick shootout against Rockhurst.
Maryville is led by third-year head coach Adam Hall, who took over the program in 2024 after previously serving as the head coach at Illinois Springfield.
Matchup Outlook
Wednesday's contest carries significant importance for two teams positioned near the top of the GLVC standings.
Quincy will look to lean on a defense that has allowed just nine goals this season while finding an offensive breakthrough after being held scoreless in four of its last five matches.
Maryville will look to respond after a frustrating loss at Rockhurst in which the Saints dominated the chances but were unable to finish.
With only three points separating Maryville and Quincy in the standings, Wednesday gives the Hawks an opportunity to make a significant move in the race for both the GLVC regular-season title and a top-four seed in the conference tournament.
Kickoff between Quincy and Maryville is scheduled for 7:30 PM Wednesday at Legends Stadium.
