QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University women's soccer team travels to Springfield, Missouri, on Saturday for a Great Lakes Valley Conference matchup against Drury University at Lake Country Soccer Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 12 PM.
Quincy enters the match with a 4-3-4 overall record and a 4-2-2 mark in GLVC play after suffering a 3-0 loss to conference-leading UMSL on Wednesday.
Drury comes into the weekend at 2-5-4 overall and 2-3-2 in conference action following a narrow 2-1 loss to Missouri S&T.
Saturday's matchup gives Quincy an opportunity to respond after its first multi-goal loss of the season while facing a Drury side that has shown it can stay competitive against several of the conference's top teams.
Last Time Out
The Hawks were held scoreless Wednesday in a 3-0 road loss to UMSL.
Quincy kept the Tritons off the scoreboard throughout the opening half, but UMSL broke through shortly after halftime and added two more goals later in the period.
The Tritons finished with a 22-5 advantage in shots and an 8-1 edge in shots on goal.
Goalkeeper
Devin Tracy made five saves while keeping Quincy within striking distance for much of the match.
Jessie Newton,
Tori Nelson,
Abbie Martin and
Claudia Andreu were among the Hawks who generated opportunities, but Quincy was unable to find the breakthrough against one of the GLVC's top teams.
The loss marked the first time this season Quincy had been defeated by more than one goal.
Offense Looks to Respond
Saturday presents an opportunity for Quincy to rediscover the attacking form that fueled much of its early conference success.
The Hawks have scored 19 goals through 11 matches and continue to be led by
Rebecca Rheinheimer and Newton.
Rheinheimer leads Quincy with seven goals, while Newton has recorded 10 assists to go along with two goals.
Newton also surpassed 100 collegiate career points with her one-goal, two-assist performance in Quincy's 4-0 victory over William Jewell.
Prior to Wednesday's loss at UMSL, the Hawks had scored eight goals across their previous three matches, highlighted by 4-0 victories over William Jewell and previously unbeaten Rockhurst.
Quincy will look to regain that offensive rhythm against a Drury team that has surrendered 16 goals through 11 matches.
Common Opponents
Quincy and Drury have already faced several of the same conference opponents this season.
Both teams earned victories over Indianapolis, with Quincy winning 5-0 and Drury defeating the Greyhounds 3-1.
Against Illinois Springfield, Drury picked up a 1-0 victory while Quincy suffered a 1-0 defeat.
The teams have also both faced UMSL. Quincy fell 3-0 on Wednesday, while Drury battled the Tritons to a scoreless draw earlier this season.
Against McKendree, Quincy opened conference play with a victory, while Drury dropped a 4-2 decision.
Those results show a Drury team capable of producing competitive performances even when the overall record has been inconsistent.
Series History
Quincy has had the advantage in the recent series with Drury, holding an 11-9-4 record since 2005, but the Panthers controlled both meetings last season.
Drury earned a 1-0 victory during the regular season before defeating Quincy 2-0 in the GLVC Tournament quarterfinals.
In the postseason matchup, Quincy continued to generate opportunities and finished with a 7-5 advantage in shots on goal, but Drury capitalized on its chances to advance.
Several current Hawks, including Tracy, Newton and Rheinheimer, played significant roles in those meetings and will look for a different result Saturday.
Scouting Drury
The Panthers enter Saturday looking to bounce back after a 2-1 loss to Missouri S&T on Wednesday.
Drury fell behind in the 15th minute and conceded again in the 60th before responding seven minutes later.
Melissa Higgins scored in the 67th minute off an assist from Mia Smith to pull the Panthers within one.
Drury continued to apply pressure down the stretch, taking seven shots over the final 21 minutes, but was unable to find the equalizer.
The Panthers finished with a 14-9 advantage in shots despite the defeat.
For the season, Drury has scored 11 goals while allowing 16.
Higgins and Carly Swan lead the Panthers with three goals apiece, while Keira Love has added two.
In goal, Katy Fitzler remains one of Drury's most experienced players.
The reigning GLVC Goalkeeper of the Year has recorded 32 saves and two shutouts this season and previously earned GLVC Defensive Player of the Week honors after helping the Panthers defeat Illinois Springfield and draw with UMSL.
Last season, Fitzler earned D2CCA Second Team All-Midwest Region honors and was named the United Soccer Coaches Midwest Region Goalkeeper of the Year while helping Drury win the GLVC Tournament championship and reach the NCAA Tournament.
The Panthers returned 27 players from last year's squad and were selected fourth in the GLVC Preseason Coaches' Poll.
Head coach Justin Olson is in his seventh season leading the program.
Matchup Outlook
Saturday's matchup features two teams looking to regain momentum after midweek losses.
Quincy will look to reestablish its attack after being held scoreless by UMSL and return to the form that produced eight goals over the previous three matches.
The Hawks will also need another steady defensive performance from Tracy and the back line against a Drury team that generated 14 shots against Missouri S&T and has shown the ability to create chances even in losses.
For Drury, Fitzler's experience in goal could play a major role as the Panthers look to slow a Quincy attack led by Rheinheimer and Newton.
With both teams battling for position in the GLVC standings, converting opportunities could be the difference Saturday.
Kickoff between Quincy and Drury is scheduled for 12 PM Saturday at Lake Country Soccer Field in Springfield, Missouri.
