Box Score ALLENDALE, Mich. – The Quincy University men's tennis team competed at the ITA Midwest Regionals hosted by Grand Valley State from September 27-29. The three-day tournament featured some of the region's top players, and the Hawks made their mark with several strong performances in both the main and consolation draws.
Inigo Villacampa led the Hawks in the main A Flight draw, advancing to the quarterfinals. Villacampa posted wins over opponents from Tiffin, Rockhurst, and Ferris State before bowing out to Indianapolis.
Enrique Doldan and
Gerard Abad Puig each earned opening-round victories in the A Flight but fell in the round of 32.
In the B and C Flights, Quincy added depth.
Cristobal Tellez collected a first-round win in the B draw before falling in the round of 32, while
Patricio Jimenez picked up a win in the C draw to reach the round of 16.
Several Hawks regrouped with strong consolation runs. The standout came from
Rodrigo Coello Trevino, who dropped a tough opening match but stormed back to win the C Flight consolation title. His run included a dramatic semifinal win over teammate
Alvaro Rueda and a three-set victory in the final over UIS. Rueda also put together a solid consolation effort, reaching the quarterfinals.
In the A Flight doubles bracket, both Quincy pairs fell in their opening matches, but rebounded well in the consolation draw. The duo of Doldan and Tellez advanced to the consolation semifinals after back-to-back wins, including an 8-4 victory over Tiffin. They eventually fell in a tiebreaker to Rockhurst. In the B draw, Rueda and Jimenez also reached the consolation semifinals, defeating teams from Harding and Indianapolis along the way before falling in another tight tiebreak.
The Hawks will return to action October 17-18 when they travel to Springfield, Missouri, to compete in the EU Invitational at the Cooper Tennis Complex.
