ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – Quincy University volleyball continued play at the Bettye Wallace Invitational with a convincing sweep over Henderson State on Friday evening, winning 25-22, 25-19, 25-23 inside the Duke Wells Center. The victory was highlighted by senior outside hitter
Susanna Beretti, who surpassed 1,000 career points after a strong 47-point performance across two games today.
The first set belonged to the Hawks, as they carried a balanced attack as the Hawks pulled ahead early with an 8-3 lead. Henderson State threatened late, trimming the deficit to two points behind a flurry of kills, but Quincy steadied itself and secured the 25-22 win on a kill from the Hawks' setter
Elena Kasavica.
Quincy found its rhythm in the second set, hitting .359 as a team to take control. Setter
Elena Kasavica distributed the ball well, spreading the offense to
Erin Matzke and
Zeynep Cetin while still keeping Beretti heavily involved. Henderson State stayed within striking distance midway through the set, but the Hawks closed on a 12-4 run to win 25-19 and take a two-set lead.
The final set proved to be the tightest of the night with seven ties and five lead changes. Henderson State came out swinging, led again by Steffes and Cassidi Campbell, but Quincy answered with timely defense and clutch offense down the stretch. The Hawks trailed 20-15, but went on a 10-3 run, which included six kills from Beretti, and the Hawks held off the Reddies 25-23 to finish the sweep. For the second straight set, Quincy hit well over .300 at a .349 rate, notching 20 kills on 43 attempts with only five errors.
Beretti was the story of the night, not only surpassing the 1,000 career point milestone but also delivering a match-high 25 kills on 50 attempts while hitting .440. She added 10 digs and an ace to total 26 points, the highest mark of the match. Kasavica directed the attack with 41 assists and contributed nine digs, two solo blocks, and an ace. Cetin added six kills and three block assists, while Matzke was efficient with five kills at a .364 clip. Defensively, libero
Lilly Marth anchored the back row with 18 digs, helping limit Henderson State's late pushes.
As a team, Quincy hit .287 with 50 kills compared to Henderson State's .234 and 45 kills. The Hawks also held a slight edge in service aces (3-1) and matched the Reddies in digs with 59.
Quincy will now look to build on its momentum with two matches on Saturday to conclude the Bettye Wallace Invitational. The Hawks take on Missouri Southern at 9 AM before a quick turnaround against Arkansas Tech at 1 PM.
