ROMEOVILLE, Ill. — Quincy men's soccer opened Great Lakes Valley Conference play on the road Sunday afternoon, falling 1–0 to Lewis at Lewis Stadium
The decisive moment came in the 19th minute, when the Flyers were awarded a penalty and Makonnen Stampley converted from the spot to give Lewis the only goal of the match. Despite the early setback, Quincy battled throughout and created opportunities, but could not find the equalizer.
The Hawks tallied seven shots, including one on frame from
Carter Venvertloh, and earned eight corner kicks to Lewis' five, applying steady pressure in the second half. Defenders
Paal Vistnes and
Ryan Myatt logged over 70 minutes each to anchor the back line.
In goal, freshman
Jake Offerman went the distance with two saves, including a key stop early in the second half to keep Quincy within striking distance. On the other side, Lewis's goalkeeper made one save to preserve the shutout.
Statistically, Lewis held a 14–7 edge in shots, while Quincy committed 22 fouls in a physical match compared to 13 by the Flyers. Four Lewis players were shown yellow cards in the final 15 minutes as the Hawks pressed forward in search of a late equalizer.
Quincy (2–1–1, 0–1–0 GLVC) will look to bounce back quickly as they continue conference play on Friday, September 19, traveling to Springfield, Illinois, to face the Prairie Stars of Illinois Springfield. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 PM at Kiwanis Stadium.
