KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – The Hawks took game two of the series over the Bulldogs of Truman State after clean play in all three aspects of the game, winning comfortably 8-2.
The Hawks jumped on the board first in the opening frame with a little help from the Bulldog defense. An error on the Truman State backstop allowed the first run to come in and score. After a scoreless bottom half from the Hawks starter
Roman Harrison, Quincy added two more in the second inning to make it 3-0. A sacrifice fly from
David Broughton, followed by a two-out RBI single from
Harry Fandre, extended the Hawk lead.
The offense continued to roll for Quincy in the fourth inning. Broughton drove in his second run of the game with an RBI single, and Fandre drove in his second run as well with a sacrifice fly of his own. The inning was capped off with another two-out hit from
Joe Huffman, slicing a double down the left field line to make it 6-0 in favor of QU.
The Bulldogs scored their first run off Harrison in the fourth inning with an RBI groundout and added another with an RBI double, splitting the right-center gap in the sixth inning to make it 6-2 Hawks. However, the Quincy offense continued to be steady through nine innings, extending the lead back to five courtesy of a solo homer from
Carson Moreno to lead off the seventh inning, his fourth home run of the season.
QU added another insurance run in the eighth inning, pushing the lead back to six after
Jake Vitale drove in Huffman with another two-out double. Harrison continued to limit the Bulldog's offense into the eighth inning, putting up another zero after evading a single and a walk.
Quincy went down quietly in the ninth inning as
Chase Golden trotted out for the home half with an 8-2 lead, looking to close the door. A pair of base runners reached, but a pop-up to the shortstop ended game two, earning the Hawks back-to-back wins to open the series.
The Hawks' offense was consistent through nine innings, putting up 11 hits and working six walks to go along with multiple big two-out hits.
Isaiah Fudge led the offense as he was 4-6 with a pair of runs scored out of the leadoff spot. On the other side of the ball, the defense and pitching were even better. The defense committed zero errors, and Harrison tossed eight innings, where he gave up two runs on six hits, three walks, and eight strikeouts, earning a team-best fifth win on the season.
The Hawks are inching closer to clinching a spot in the GLVC Tournament with another win against Truman State but have yet to secure a spot. Quincy will look to continue its winning ways with the final games of the regular season taking place tomorrow afternoon with a doubleheader against the Bulldogs beginning at 12:00 PM CDT, with game two to follow.
