Hawks' Offense Silenced in Doubleheader Loss to Maryville

QUINCY, Ill. – The Hawks were shutout for 14 consecutive innings in a doubleheader loss to Maryville on Saturday (Apr. 26). Both games were owned by the pitchers, but the Saints walked away with a 2-0 and 1-0 victory to earn a Saturday sweep of Quincy.

GAME ONE

The first inning began with a run from the Saints courtesy of an RBI groundout from their designated hitter, but that would be the only run scored through the first five innings. Hawks starter Roman Harrison settled in after surrendering the first-inning run, putting up four consecutive zeroes on the defensive side.

With Harrison still in the game, Maryville doubled its lead with a towering fly ball that cleared the left field wall. Harrison was able to limit the damage and keep it at a 2-0 game. Despite being over 100 pitches, the Hawks sent Harrison out for the seventh, where he recorded one out and left the game with runners at first and second. Harrison finished his outing with 121 pitches, where he tossed 6.1 innings and surrendered two runs on seven hits, one walk, and eight strikeouts.

Leyton Parmer entered the game and retired the final two batters on six pitches to send the Hawks to the home seventh, trailing 2-0. The Saints sent their starter Ben Gregory back out for the seventh, and he finished what he started, setting the Hawks down in order to secure a Maryville win in game one.

The Hawks offense was only able to muster together three hits and left five runners on base. Quincy had opportunities to find the run column, but questionable baserunning and the inability to find a timely hit cost the Hawks game one, despite great pitching and defense.

GAME TWO

The second game of the doubleheader consisted of another pitchers' duel between the two squads. Hawks starter Kyle Manship opened up the game with three zeroes and Maryville starter Ty Rauser matched Manship with three scoreless frames of his own.

The first and only run of the ballgame came in the top of the fourth inning when the Saints left fielder drove in a run with a groundout to shortstop. Manship settled back in, tossing zeroes in the fifth and sixth innings to conclude his outing. Manship gave up the lone run on four hits, four walks, and seven punchouts.

Parmer saw action once again in game two, retiring the first two batters of the seventh inning, and Brett Panick came in to record the final out with a pop-up to right field. The Hawks only had four runners reach base off Rauser heading into the home half, trailing by one. Rauser struck out the first man he saw, but Isaiah Fudge laced a single through the 3-4 hole to bring the go-ahead run to the plate. However, Rauser continued to dominate, punching out the next two batters to wrap up game two and shut out the Hawks for the second game in a row.

Quincy will look to wake up the bats for the series finale tomorrow against Maryville, with a single nine-inning game beginning at 12:00 CDT from QU Stadium.
