BOLIVAR, Mo. — The Quincy University men's tennis team made history on Monday afternoon, earning its 13th win of the season — a new program record — with a 5-2 road victory over Southwest Baptist University in Great Lakes Valley Conference play at the John A. Bryant Tennis Center.
The Hawks (13-8, 2-2 GLVC) surpassed the previous record of 12 wins set by the 2002-03 squad, capping off a memorable regular season. The win also keeps Quincy's postseason hopes alive, as they now await official word on a potential bid to the GLVC Tennis Championships, set for May 2-4 in Springfield, Illinois.
"I could not be more proud of these men," said Quincy head coach Wyatt Pauley. "They have accomplished all of our preseason goals which is something many teams are never able to do."
The Hawks opened strong in doubles, securing the point behind victories at the top two spots. Inigo Villacampa and Joseph Restrepo claimed a 7-5 decision at No. 1 doubles, while Gianni Lopez and Rodrigo Coello Treviño battled through a tiebreaker to win 7-6 (7-5) at No. 2. Southwest Baptist picked up the win at No. 3, but Quincy carried the momentum into singles with a 1-0 lead.
"Our doubles teams today battled with some of the best in the conference and were able to get a 1-0 lead," Pauley added. "Once we got into singles our veteran leadership were able to upset a great team in the GLVC and hopefully secure a GLVC tournament berth."
In singles play, Villacampa led the charge with a 6-2, 7-6 (13-11) win in a tense match at No. 1. Restrepo followed with a solid 6-3, 6-3 victory at No. 2, while Gerard Abad Puig rallied from a set down for a clutch 2-6, 7-5, 6-0 win at No. 4. Pablo Mateos Niella added the final point for Quincy at No. 6, rolling to a 6-2, 6-2 decision.
The Hawks dropped matches at No. 3 and No. 5 singles but had already sealed the historic team victory.
"Today's victory was one of the best moments in QU tennis history," Pauley concluded.
