ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Quincy University men's lacrosse team were on the road for the final time this season, facing off against the No. 11 Saints of Maryville University for a GLVC showdown on Saturday morning (April 12). The Hawks put up a strong fight in the second half, scoring four times to six Saints goals, but a 10-1 scoring deficit in the opening 30 minutes proved to be the deciding factor in a 16-5 defeat.
MU ripped off five unanswered scores to open the contest with a formidable advantage after the first quarter, prompting the Hawks' first score of the contest in the opening minute of the second frame, coming by way of a
Haakon Steen unassisted goal in a man-up situation to put Quincy on the board.
Five more Saints goals in the following 14 minutes drew the tally to 10-1 at the halftime break.
QU came out firing in the third quarter, outscoring Maryville 3-2 in the frame thanks to goals from
Sean Usher,
Mason Luoma, and another from Steen, the first two coming on assists from
Eli Cowan with the third come off a feed from Luoma to narrow the margin to 12-4 at the end of the third.
The Saints opened the fourth quarter on a 3-0 run, holding Quincy off the scoreboard until Luoma netter his second with 1:50 remaining to make the score 15-5 and close out the Hawks' scoring effort in the contest.
Quincy's keeper,
Austin Vetter turned away 17 of 33 shots he faced for a 51% save percentage in the losing effort.
