QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's tennis team kicked off Great Lakes Valley Conference action with a strong 6-1 victory over William Jewell College on Thursday afternoon (April 11) at Reservoir Park. The win improves the Hawks to 12-6 on the season and 1-0 in conference play.
Quincy earned the doubles point behind wins at No. 1 and No. 2. The tandem of Gianni Lopez and Rodrigo Coello Treviño cruised to a 6-2 win at No. 2, and the top pairing of Inigo Villacampa and Joseph Restrepo edged out a tight 7-6 (7-4) victory to clinch the point. William Jewell picked up a win at No. 3 doubles, but Quincy carried a 1-0 lead into singles.
The Hawks stayed in control during singles, winning five of six matches. Villacampa continued his impressive form at No. 1, winning 6-2, 7-6 (7-3), while Restrepo rallied for a 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 2. Lopez and Gerard Abad Puig also earned gritty three-set victories at No. 3 and No. 4, respectively.
Pablo Mateos Niella closed out Quincy's fifth point with a 3-6, 6-4, 10-2 comeback at No. 6 singles. William Jewell's lone point came at No. 5, where Max Quennery edged Coello Treviño in a third-set tiebreaker.
