Hawks Dominate No. 18 Lewis with Explosive 17-0 Win

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – The Quincy offense came out swinging against the 18th-ranked Lewis Flyers on Friday afternoon (4/11/25). An eight-run fifth inning propelled the Hawks to a 17-0 win over Lewis, handing the Flyers just their third conference loss of the season.

After a scoreless first frame, Quincy answered the bell first, scoring three runs in the second inning. Carson Moreno got the offense going with an RBI single to center field. One batter later, on a 3-2 count, Jake Vitale parked his fifth home run of the year to drive in Moreno and make it 3-0.

In the following frame, the Hawks doubled their lead with another three spot. An RBI groundout from Isaiah Fudge and a little help from the Flyer's defense allowed a second run to score. Vitale once again capped off the inning with an RBI single and his third RBI of the game.

With a 6-0 lead, Quincy blew the game open with eight runs in the top of the fifth inning. The offense began with a pair of run-scoring singles from Moreno and Matt Mateo. The next three runs scored on back-to-back errors from the Flyers middle infielders. Joe Huffman continued the offensive clinic with an RBI single up the middle. The inning finished off with Moreno driving in his fourth and fifth RBIs of the game with a base hit to center field.

The QU offense continued to pour it on the Flyers in the sixth inning. Harry Fandre got in the action with an RBI single to right field followed by an RBI double from Huffman to make it 16-0.

Heading into the seventh, Brandon Pickus kicked off the inning with his first career hit with a double to right field. He came around to score the Hawks's 17th run after Jack Haggard drove in his third RBI of the season with a groundout to third base.

Hawks starter Kobe Essien was not to be overlooked throughout the offensive explosion for Quincy. Essien shut out one of the best offenses in the country for just the second time this season. In seven innings, Kobe threw 111 pitches giving up six hits, walking one, and striking out a season-high nine batters.

The game finished in seven innings, and the Hawks managed to rattle off 20 hits for the second time this season. All nine starters for the Hawks found the hit column and five Hawks had multi-hit games. The bottom four in the Quincy order dominated the Flyer's pitching staff, going a combined 10-16 with three extra-base hits and 11 runs driven in. Quincy also ran wild on the bases, stealing five bags, Huffman had a career-high three, bringing his season total up to 14.

Quincy will look to carry the offense into tomorrow's doubleheader against the Flyers in Romeoville, with the first pitch expected to be tossed at 12:00 PM CDT from Brennan Field.
