KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The Hawks were on the road to take on a nonconference opponent in the Hawks of Rockhurst, falling to RU in three sets (21-25, 23-25, 14-25).
AJ Goedheer and
Ryne Jacobsen led Quincy with eight kills apiece, as
Dylan Feely directed the offense with 18 assists while
Isaiah Travis spearheaded the defensive effort with six blocks and
Bauer Larson added four digs.
Set One
Neither side was able to create much of an edge until a three-point Quincy run on a Goedheer kill and two RU errors thrust the Hawks ahead 9-6. Rockhurst got right back into it moments later with four straight scores to press ahead 13-11, before using another run of four shortly after to extend the advantage to 17-12.
QU took six of the next nine points to pull back within two at 20-18, trimming the deficit to 21-20 shortly after on a Jacobsen kill and
Travis Mendoza ace. RU held it down from there, taking four of the next five points to claim the set.
Set Two
The second set featured lots of swings, as Quincy took the first one, using a three-point run to cap off a 6-2 opening to the frame. Rockhurst responded with its own run of four to even the tally before a Jacobsen kill, Travis block, and Feely kill and block put QU ahead 9-6.
RU took six of the next seven to move out in front 12-10, before a service error later in the set evened the score back up at 14-14. Rockhurst swings of four and three points found the Hawks trailing 21-16 late in the set.
Quincy utilized runs of two, two and three points to burst back into contention late, drawing the score at 23-23, prompting RU to take the next two points and the set 25-23.
Set Three
Rockhurst opened the set on a 4-0 run as part of a greater 9-2 stretch to begin the third. An error, a Jacobsen kill and
Malachi Allen ace pulled Quincy back within four at 9-5, before six of the next nine points went to RU to put the Hawks in a tough spot down 15-7.
It was all Rockhurst from there, as the Hawks in blue went on to take the set 25-14, and the match 3-0.
