Hawks Split Doubleheader with Peacocks

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 QUINCY, Ill. - The Quincy University baseball team hosted the Peacocks of Upper Iowa to a split of its Saturday (Mar. 18) GLVC doubleheader, taking game one by a 9-5 score before dropping the nightcap 6-5.

Game One

UIU ambushed Hawks starter, Kobe Essien to the tune of a pair of runs to kick off the game as a one-out, two-run longball lifted the Peacocks to an early advantage, prompting a two-run Quincy response in the bottom half.

QU used a one-out walk along with a single and stolen base from David Broughton to put two men in scoring position for an RBI groundout from JD Ortiz. A wild pitch in the next AB evened the tally at 2-2 after one.

The Hawks added a run in both the second and third innings, getting the first on a Jake Vitale sac fly in the second, followed by a leadoff homer in the third from Matt Mateo to move ahead 4-2 after three innings as Essien set down UIU in order over that stretch.

Upper Iowa tagged on another run in the fourth, opening the inning with a homer to narrow the margin to 4-3 and bring a close to the scoring until the home half of the fifth where a two-out bomb off the bat of Ortiz add some insurance making it 6-3 with six outs to get.

The Peacocks looked poised to mount a comeback late in the game, adding a two runs in the bottom of the sixth to draw within one at 6-5. QU responded with a three-spot in the bottom half, utilizing a Mateo two RBI single before Mateo came around himself on a wild pitch later in the inning to make it 9-5 Quincy.

After a pair of walks put two Peacocks on to open the top of the last, Roman Harrison came on in relief, facing just two batters to collect three outs and the save, closing the book on a 9-5 winner in game one.

Game Two

UIU struck early, just as it did in game one, putting up a trio of runs in the opening frame as the Peacocks did all of their scoring in the first three innings, adding another in the second and two more in the third to sting Hawks starter, Tom Conzemius for six runs.

On the flip side, after a quiet first inning, the Hawks bats responded in the second, getting a leadoff homer from Joe Huffman before a Carson Moreno blast off the left field foul pole two batters later pulled QU to within one at 4-3.

Isaiah Fudge drove in another for Quincy with an RBI single to right in the bottom of the third in response of the Upper Iowa two-run top half of the third to bring the tally to 6-4 Peacocks after three.

Logan Mueller came on in relief of Conzemius in the top of the fourth, working around an error, base hit and HBP to work a scoreless frame before laying down the side in order in the fifth and retiring the first two hitters of the sixth, then giving way to Tim Reinholz, who collected the final out of the frame.

Quincy got back into the scoring column in the bottom half of the sixth, making use of a leadoff hit-by-pitch and sacrifice to set the stage for an RBI groundout from Moreno to trim the margin to 6-5 heading to the last.

A 1-2-3 inning from Reinholz in the seventh brought the Hawks to the plate in the bottom half with three outs to notch a run.

Harry Fandre got things started with an infield single, followed up by a sacrifice to move the runner to second before a one-out Mateo base hit to left gave the Hawks a chance to tie it up, but an on-the-money throw from the Peacocks left fielder gunned down the tying run at home for the second out before Mateo, himself was caught trying to swipe second in the next AB to end the game.

The Hawks are back in action tomorrow for the series finale with Upper Iowa. QU will look to lock up a series victory on opening weekend of GLVC play, starting at 12:00 PM.
