Hawks Fall to No. 15 Flyers in Five Sets

QUINCY, Ill. - The Hawks faced off against the No. 15 Flyers for a second time in eight days on Saturday evening (Mar. 1), playing at a different site on this occasion at Pepsi Arena, but suffering the same result in a hard-fought five set defeat (25-19, 17-25, 19-25, 25-17, 8-15).

Aleksandar Sosa had another strong performance, just as he did at Lewis eight days prior, this time going for a match-high 19 kills, hitting at a .333 percentage to go along with two blocks, an ace and three digs.

Set One

An early four-point run on two LU errors and blocks from Tomas Badan and Barnabas Fenyvesi helped Quincy to an early 5-2 advantage.

Lewis closed the gap to one at 8-7 shortly after, prompting the sides to trade the following 12 points before QU broke the pattern with a Fenyvesi kill and Armaan Dosanjh ace to press ahead 16-13.

The Hawks kept the pressure on, taking six of the next nine points to open a 22-16 edge late in the frame. Moments later, a Sosa kill sealed a 25-19 win in the opening set.

Set Two

After dropping the first three points of the set, a trio of two-point QU scores did the heavy lifting in an 8-4 over the next 12 points that saw Quincy move ahead 8-7.

Later in the set at 11-10 Flyers, Lewis used swings of five and three points to burst out in front 19-11, proving to be the deciding actions of the frame, as LU went on to take the second set 25-17.

Set Three

A block and kill from Relja Milosavljevic put the Hawks ahead to open the set until a trio of Lewis scores made it 3-2. LU was able to press the advantage to three at 9-6 later in the set, bringing about a pair of two-point Hawks runs to even the tally at 10-10.

Quincy hung around until the 17-16 mark, where the Flyers took seven of the following nine points to burst out in front 24-18 before taking the set 25-19 two points later.

Set Four

QU kicked off the fourth set with a 4-0 run on kills from Sosa and Milosavljevic, a Dosanjh ace and a Lewis error. LU was unable to creep any closer than three points up to ath 10-7 mark, where Quincy claimed five straight scores to blow the set wide open at 15-7.

The Flyers trimmed the deficit to five later in the set at 18-13, but the Hawks weren't having it, firing off a run of five points capped off by a Badan ace to all but close out the set with a 23-13 edge. Soon after, another Sosa kill closed the book on a 25-17 win to force a fifth set.

Set Five

Kills from Sosa and Milosavljevic deadlocked the score at 2-2 before Lewis used a five-point run as part of a 7-1 swing to press ahead 9-3. QU was unable to make up the lost ground in the swift race to 15 points, dropping the final set 15-8 and match 3-2.
