QUINCY, Ill. - The Hawks kicked off their season against a nationally ranked opponent, hosting Rockhurst for a 14-10 loss at QU Stadium on Monday afternoon (Feb. 3). Quincy played RU to a draw in periods one, three and four, collectively, but a six-goal second period from the opposition proved to be the difference in the match.
Mason Luoma led the way in scoring with a trio of goals while
Sean Usher and
Caleb Hensley both recorded four points.
RU opened the scoring with a pair of goals to begin the first period before Luoma netted the first Quincy goal of the season on one of Hensley's four assists in the contest to halve the deficit 2-1. Following a Rockhurst score, Luoma found the back of the net again for his second of the opening period, a man-up score on a feed from
Sean Usher to pull the Hawks within a score.
A
Caidyn Prediger man-up goal less than a minute into the second period evened the tally at 3-3 as Prediger went on to score the next QU goal shortly after to knot the score at 4-4 before Rockhurst went on a 5-0 run to close out the first half with a 9-4 edge.
The sides traded three goals apiece to a 12-7 score in the third period with the Quincy scores coming from Luoma,
Sean Usher and
Haakon Steen.
Sean Usher,
Colin Usher and
Eli Cowan goals in the fourth period helped the Hawks out-score Rockhurst 3-2 in the closing 15 minutes, but it was too little too late as the early deficit proved too much to overcome.
