AMERICUS, Ga. – The Hawks finished their southern road trip with a rubber match against Georgia Southwestern on Saturday (Feb. 22), falling to the Hurricanes with a final score of 11-7
The Hurricanes struck first with a crooked number in the bottom half of the third, putting up five runs on five hits and taking advantage of a miscue from the Hawks's defense.
Quincy found the scoring column with a pair of RBI singles from
Matt Mateo and
David Broughton, cutting the lead down to 5-2. The Hurricanes quickly responded with two runs of their own in the bottom half, scoring two runs on a wild pitch and a base hit.
Jake Vitale cut into the deficit with a single through the right side to bring in
Isaiah Fudge in the sixth innings. The Hawks continued to crawl back into the game after a run-scoring double from
JD Ortiz in the seventh. GSW gifted the Hawks another run after an error from the left fielder, making it 7-5 in favor of the Hurricanes after seven innings.
QU quickly turned things to the top of the eighth after a 1-2-3 inning from
Quinn Schultz. A leadoff walk for
Jake Vitale put the tying run on base for the Hawks. After a sacrifice bunt to advance Vitale to second,
Ben Dahlof made it a one-run game with an RBI double down the left-field line. Two batters later, Broughton tied the game up with his third hit of the game at 7-7.
GSW responded in a big way in the bottom half with three run-scoring hits, including a two-run big fly over the left field wall to give the Hurricanes an 11-7 lead. The Hawks went down quietly in the ninth inning to bring the ballgame to a close.
Quincy will head home for the first time this season with a four-game series against the Colorado School of Mines, beginning on Friday (Feb. 28), with the first pitched scheduled for 2:00 PM.
