Box Score ALBANY, Ga. – The Hawks traveled to Albany, Georgia, for a midweek matchup against the Rams of Albany State University on Tuesday afternoon (Feb. 18). A big six-run sixth inning from the Rams was enough to get by the Hawks 7-5.
Quincy struck first in the top half of the second courtesy of an RBI groundout from
Isaiah Fudge for his second RBI of the season. The Rams quickly answered off the Hawks starter
Kyle Manship after a leadoff triple and a run-scoring single knotted the game up at one.
The Hawks quickly regained the lead in the third with a passed ball, followed by a wild pitch to give the Hawks a 3-1 lead. A strike 'em out, throw 'em out from Manship and catcher
Byron Blaise ended the Ram's threat in the third.
QU scored for the third straight inning with another RBI groundout from Blaise, driving in Fudge, who made his way around after a single and an error.
The Hawks continued to extend their lead in the sixth inning with a run-scoring groundout from
Jack Haggard for his first RBI of the season. Heading into the bottom of the sixth inning, Quincy went to their bullpen for the first time.
Alex Pickus came in for Manship after five fantastic innings from the sophomore from Fishers, Indiana. Manship finished the day with eight strikeouts and only allowed one run on three hits.
Albany State quickly jumped on Pickus for three singles and a walk to cut the Hawks lead down to 5-3 before QU went to the bullpen once again. Drew Kelliher came in out of the bullpen and struggled to find the strike zone. Four hit batters brought in a pair of runs to tie the game, and then an RBI groundout gave the Rams their first lead of the game at 6-5. The Rams were not done, as they completed their six-run sixth inning with a line drive single to make it 7-5 in favor of Albany State.
The Hawks went down quietly in the seventh and eighth innings, looking for a rally with their final three outs. Haggard got things going with a well-placed bunt single down the third base line, bringing the tying run to the plate. Unfortunately, the Hawks did not have any late-inning magic, as the game concluded with an unconventional double play.
The Hawks will have a day off before a three-game series against Georgia Southwestern State University beginning on Thursday (Feb. 20), with the first pitch scheduled for 6:00 PM EST.
