Quincy Shutout in Rubber Match Against Tampa

Box Score TAMPA, Fla. – Quincy was back in action for a rubber match against the #1 team in the country, the University of Tampa Spartans. The Hawks were unable to get the offense going, falling 4-0 despite outhitting the Spartans.

The Spartans got on the board first with a sac fly to deep center field with the bases loaded. Hawks starter Ben Draeger later surrendered a two-out double off the left field wall, which made it 2-0 Tampa after two innings.

Those two runs were the only runs Draeger would surrender after his day concluded after 3.2 innings. Tom Conzemius entered the game in the bottom of the fourth in relief after Draeger left runners at first and second. It took Conzemius a few pitches to get out of the inning with a groundball to first base, officially closing the book on Draeger, who gave up two runs on two hits, two walks, three hit batters, and a pair of strikeouts.

Conzemius did his job out of the bullpen, keeping the game tied heading into the seventh inning, as his day finished with zero runs on one hit, one walk, and a pair of strikeouts through 2.1 innings. The Hawks turned to Logan Mueller trailing by two in the bottom of the seventh. Mueller made quick work of the Spartans after a few nice defensive plays from the Hawks.

Following a scoreless top half of the eighth, Tampa added some insurance after Mueller loaded the bases, and Adyn Collins came in as the fourth pitcher for the Hawks, as a passed ball scored the third run of the game. The second sacrifice fly of the day for Tampa extended the lead to 4-0, as the Hawks had three outs to work with heading into the ninth inning.

The Hawks had a few men reach in the ninth inning, but the Spartans closer worked around trouble and closed the door to take game three of the series for Tampa, 4-0. Quincy outhit the Spartans 8-5 but left 12 runners on base, as they were 1-8 with runners in scoring position and 3-15 with runners on base.

QU will take a day off for travel and then be back in action for a midweek contest on Tuesday (Feb. 18) against Albany State University. The first pitch is expected to be tossed at 2:00 PM EST from Golden Rams' Field.
