Bulldogs’ Free Throws Seal One-Score Win Over Hawks

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - The Hawks dropped a hard-fought road contest on Wednesday morning, falling 70–67 to the Bulldogs of Truman State inside Pershing Arena. Despite a late surge fueled by the three-point line, Truman State's execution at the free-throw stripe proved to be the difference as the Hawks suffered their third consecutive loss.

The opening ten minutes were tightly contested, with neither side able to create separation. Quincy scored the first five points of the game, and neither team had a lead by more than five in the quarter. The period featured six ties and five lead changes, and the two teams were nearly identical statistically, each recording nine rebounds and knocking down one three-pointer. The quarter ended deadlocked at 15.

The Bulldogs created breathing room in the second frame. Quincy briefly held a 26–25 advantage midway through the quarter after triples from Katey Flynn, Blair Eftink, and Karly Peters, but Truman State closed the half on a decisive 10–0 run. The Hawks were held scoreless over the final five minutes of the quarter, shooting 0-for-7 from the field with three turnovers, as Truman State carried a 35–26 lead into halftime.

After a scoreless opening 90 seconds, Quincy struck first, but the Bulldogs answered with a near-perfect stretch offensively. After missing their first three shots, Truman State went 7-for-7 from the field, 3-for-3 from beyond the arc, and 4-for-4 at the free-throw line in the quarter. The Hawks stayed within striking distance by capitalizing on five Bulldog turnovers and receiving two triples from Sydney Runsewe, but Quincy still entered the fourth quarter trailing by double digits.

Quincy showed resilience in the final period, leaning heavily on the three-point shot. The Hawks opened the quarter on an 11–3 run over the first four minutes, shooting 4-for-5 from the floor and knocking down three triples to cut the deficit to three with six minutes remaining.

The Hawks had several opportunities to take the lead as Truman State went cold offensively, but Quincy was unable to convert. With just under two minutes remaining, Peters finished a fast-break layup to tie the game at 60 for the first time since the second quarter. Truman State responded immediately with a key three-pointer, regaining the lead.

The final minute stretched on at the free-throw line, where the Bulldogs sealed the game by going 7-for-8 in the closing moments. Runsewe drilled her third three-pointer of the game with nine seconds left to keep hopes alive, but Truman State's execution from the stripe closed out the 70–67 victory.

Quincy shot 41.7 percent from the field compared to Truman State's 44.4 percent. The Hawks knocked down 11 three-pointers to just five for the Bulldogs, but the disparity came at the free-throw line. Truman State went 25-for-29 from the stripe, while Quincy attempted only nine free throws, making six.

The Hawks were led offensively by Flynn, who scored 13 points for the seventh time this season. Peters added 10 points, three rebounds, and four assists from the point guard position, while Acheampomaa Danso narrowly missed a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds on an efficient 5-for-6 shooting performance.

The Hawks will break for the holidays before returning to action with the remainder of the regular season played entirely within GLVC competition. Quincy will be back on the floor on Friday, January 2 at 5:30 PM, hosting conference-leading Missouri–St. Louis, who enter the matchup 8–2 overall and 4–0 in GLVC play.
