17 Threes Lift Upper Iowa Past Quincy in GLVC Opener

QUINCY, Ill. - The Quincy women's basketball team opened GLVC play at Pepsi Arena on Sunday afternoon but came up short in a 91–83 loss to Upper Iowa. The Peacocks connected on 17 three-pointers and used back-to-back 30-point quarters in the middle frames to secure their first conference win of the season.

Quincy came out firing, scoring on its first three trips as Karly Peters and Hampton Williams sparked a quick 5–0 run. After Upper Iowa grabbed its first lead midway through the quarter on consecutive three-pointers, the Hawks answered with a 9–2 spurt of their own behind five points from Sydney Runsewe to go back in front 16–9. Quincy finished the period strong, going to the free-throw line repeatedly, scoring seven points in the final 60 seconds to take a 25–16 advantage after one.

Upper Iowa opened the frame with consecutive baskets and slowly worked its way back into the game. With just under seven minutes to play, the Peacocks put together a 9–1 surge to even the score at 30. The rest of the quarter featured fast-paced, back-and-forth action as both teams traded baskets, but foul trouble began to mount for the Hawks as Upper Iowa reached the bonus with more than six minutes remaining. In the final 60 seconds, the Peacocks ended the half on an 8–2 run, capped by a half-court buzzer-beater, to take a 46–43 lead into the break.

The game swung decisively in the third as Upper Iowa caught fire from deep. The Peacocks poured in 31 points in the quarter, knocking down seven three-pointers while shooting nearly 67 percent from the field. Quincy stayed aggressive offensively, going 8-of-9 at the free-throw line in the period, but the barrage from behind the arc pushed Upper Iowa's advantage to 77–61 heading to the fourth.

The Hawks refused to go quietly, opening the final frame on a 9–3 run to trim the deficit. Quincy continued to battle and cut the lead to seven on a three-pointer from Katey Flynn with just under three minutes to play. A defensive stop and fast-break opportunity followed, but a missed layup kept the margin from shrinking further and truly swinging the momentum in favor of QU. Upper Iowa responded by knocking down timely free throws and a final three to seal the 91–83 road win.

Quincy turned in one of its strongest offensive efforts of the season, shooting 52 percent from the floor, the fourth time this season shooting above 50 percent, while scoring a season-high 83 points. The difference came from the perimeter, where Upper Iowa finished 17-for-34 from three-point range. The Hawks held a narrow 32–31 rebounding edge but were hurt by 23 Peacock points off turnovers. Both teams combined for 46 fouls, and Quincy capitalized at the line, converting 25 of its 32 free-throw attempts.

Katey Flynn once again led the way, scoring a game-high 23 points while going a perfect 8-for-8 at the free-throw line and 3-for-3 from downtown. Karly Peters turned in her best outing of the season with 13 points on 4-of-6 shooting, adding four rebounds and three steals. Off the bench, Sydney Runsewe provided a spark with 12 points, while freshman Hayven Harden made an immediate impact in just her second career game, scoring 10 points and pulling down three rebounds.

Quincy continues conference play on Thursday night at Pepsi Arena, when the Hawks host Missouri S&T with tip-off set for 5:30 PM, as Quincy looks to snap a two-game skid and earn its first GLVC win of the season.
