QUINCY, Ill. - The men's wrestling team narrowly fell to Drury 21-20 on Friday evening (Jan. 31) in GLVC dual action at the QU Health and Fitness Center Three Court Area. Five Hawks picked up wins as Quincy got strong performances in 141, 157, 184 and 197 along with a forfeit win in 133 to come up just short of victory.
The dual started with some intense back-and-forth action. At 125 pounds, Drury's Bryson Humphries got the better of
Brian Farley, earning a major decision with a 14-1 victory. Quincy bounced back at 133 pounds, where
Isaac Bourge picked up a forfeit win, building momentum for the 141-pound matchup where
Sabian Russell put on an impressive performance, dominating Nathan Wishne with an 18-1 technical fall to put QU ahead 11-4.
Drury's Trevor Christian secured a victory by medical forfeit against
Zachary Harrington at 149 pounds to narrow the margin to 11-10, Quincy. At 157 pounds,
Hunter Vernon contended vigorously to earn a 4-1 decision over Joe Kuster, giving the Hawks a crucial win and 14-10 lead. However, Drury responded at 165 pounds with 13th-ranked Will Kuster defeating
Jackson Jones, 7-1, to pull back within a point at 14-13.
The action continued at 174 pounds, where Drury's Jeremiah Halter dealt
Aaron Taylor a 17-2 loss for a tech fall to vault the Panthers ahead 18-14.
Callan Ivy kept the Hawks alive with a gritty 5-3 decision over Tristan Staat at 184 pounds before a hard-fought battle at 197 pounds from
Maxim Ryner secured a 3-1 win over Wade Stanton to put QU head 20-18 heading into the final bout.
At 285 pounds, Drury's Jack Stoffel closed out the dual with a 9-4 decision over
Logan Colbert, securing the 21-20 win for the Panthers.
