Quincy, Ill. - The Quincy University women's basketball team extended their win streak to eight on Saturday afternoon (Jan. 25) with 82-69 win over Truman State University. Quincy's effort to regain and maintain possession was prominent throughout the game and enabled multiple Hawks to score in the double digits.
The first minutes were average for the Hawks compared to the rest of the game. The Bulldogs pulled away from the Hawks with their best lead toward the end of the first quarter, but the senior duo of Cymirah Williams and Karsyn Stratton helped the Hawks back to a lead before the turn of the quarter.
The Hawks took advantage of transition play in the second quarter, scoring all but one basket off the fast break. Quincy also had a knack of forcing Truman State to give up possession. The Hawks had four steals in the quarter with Janiece Dawson taking away two consecutive balls from the Bulldogs. Truman State kept things close, and Quincy was only able to maintain a three-point lead by halftime.
The third and fourth quarters belonged to Quincy. Mariann Blass came alive with clutch three-point shooting, including a jumper that put the Hawks back in the lead after a three from the Bulldogs. Quincy was efficient off the boards, and out-rebounded the Bulldogs 14-6 in the third quarter alone. Williams secured back-to-back steals that began the Hawks' run for a 14-point lead.
Despite four three-pointers from the Bulldogs in the fourth quarter, Quincy was able to keep the lead up. Nicole McDermott posted eight points in the final minutes of the game and the Hawks snagged five steals off six turnovers from the Bulldogs.
Four of the Hawks starters had points in the doubles Saturday afternoon--Williams, McDermott, Stratton, and Blass. Stratton led the bunch in assists with six and secured her 100th career assist along with teammate Mikayla Huffine. With her ten rebounds this afternoon, Taylor Haase surpassed 100 rebounds for the season. Janiece Dawson sank her 750th point this afternoon as well.
The Hawks are trending forward and currently sit third in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The Hawks hit the road to Southwest Bapist on Thursday before traveling up to Kansas City to face the Hawks of Rockhurst University on Saturday.
