Hawks Take Streak to Nine with Road Win over Bearcats

Box Score Bolivar, Mo. - The Quincy University women's basketball team started their road trip hot with a 66-54 win over the Bearcats of Southwest Baptist Univeristy on Thursday evening (Jan. 30). The Hawks extended their streak to nine wins, the best streak of Quincy women's basketball since 2016.Ā

Southwest Baptist won the tipoff and pushed to the basket to score the first points of the game after just five seconds off the clock. The Hawks responded quickly with a left wing three-pointer from Mariann Blass. Cymirah Williams and Karsyn Stratton each put in a basket before the Bearcats got back on the board. The Hawks then went on a 12-point run, half of those points coming from outside the arc. Quincy kept Southwest Baptist to just nine points and out-rebounded the Bearcats 16-6 in the first quarter.Ā

The Bearcats defense ramped up in the second quarter, keeping the Hawks to just 14 points. The Bearcats forced Quincy into nine turnovers and scored all ten of their points off of Quincy slips ups. Quincy kept their shooting percentage consistent through the first half, going 50 percent from the field and from outside the arc. Blass led the Hawks with ten points after 20 minutes and Williams led Quincy in boards with nine.

Blass started off the second half with another three-point bucket before the Bearcats made a 6-0 run and closed the gap to just twelve points. This was the first time the Bearcats out-shot the Hawks in the game, scoring 18 points in the third quarter to the Hawks' 14. Quincy struggled with shootingĀ in the field butĀ were able to make it up with free throws in the bonus at the end of the quarter.Ā

Quincy allowed the Bearcats to come within two possessions at the start of the final quarter but pushed back with back-to-back layups from Williams and Acheampomaa Danso. Danso's layup put her over the 500 mark for career points as a Hawk.Ā Southwest Baptist got into foul trouble again and gave the Hawks ten extra shots at the line, helping them secure the road victory.Ā

Blass led the Hawks with 17 points while Williams led the Hawks in boards with 13. Nicole McDermott went 6 for 8 from the line and dished out six assists in Thursday evening's contest. Taya Stevenson secured a career-high nine rebounds in Bolivar.Ā

The Hawks look to keep things going with the Hawk battle at Rockhurst University on Saturday. Following Saturday's contest, the GLVC's first rendition of the Point Rating System will be released on Sunday, February 2nd.Ā
