Quincy, Ill. – The Quincy University women's basketball team captured their seventh straight win on Thursday night (Jan. 23) with a 22-point leap over the Cardinals of William Jewell College. The graduating class, alone, scored 70 points in the 89-67 victory.
The Hawks started off with a 6-0 run courtesy of
Acheampomaa Danso and
Karsyn Stratton. Quincy allowed William Jewell to get within range and jousted for the lead throughout the rest of the first quarter, but the Hawks regained the lead at the end with a
Nicole McDermott layup.
Quincy had another strong start in the second quarter with six uninterrupted baskets.
Taylor Haase and
Cymirah Williams traded off two layups each in that time, and each collected rebounds for the Hawks to create those chances.
Janiece Dawson came into the game and made an impact during the second quarter with 11 points, aiding the Hawks to a 20-point lead going into halftime.
The Hawks kept their feet on the gas out of the locker room, producing the second straight quarter with at least 25 points. The Cardinals got into foul trouble early on that gave way to 11 free throw points out of 12 chances.
William Jewell had their best run late in the fourth quarter after the Hawks built the lead up to 29 points. The Cardinals found nine straight points in the final minutes, but it was not enough to reverse the damage the Hawks had done throughout the game.
The Hawks were led by graduate transfers McDermott and Haase who scored 16 points each. McDermott went 10 for 10 from the line, her second time going perfect in double digit free throws this season. Haase had a perfect night from the field and secured her second double-double after grabbing 10 boards.
Williams earned the Hawks' second double double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
Mariann Blass and
Janiece Dawson each had season-high nights with Blass's six assists and Dawson's 14 points.
The Hawks have one more home game on deck before they hit the road. Quincy will take on Highway 6 foe Truman State University on Saturday, January 25th with tip-off at 1 p.m.
