Quincy, Ill. - The Hawks were at home on Thursday night (Jan. 23) as they took on the Cardinals of William Jewell College in a Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC)Â match up.
It was a slow start for Quincy as the Cardinals got off to a 9-0 start, and the Hawks could not score their first bucket until the 15-minute mark after a layup from
Ethyn Brown. The Hawks quickly kicked things into gear, going on a 9-2 run to even the score at 11 points a piece at the under-12 media timeout.
The teams battled back and forth for the rest of the first half, with both sides' largest lead at five points. A quick steal from Brown led to a transition layup for
Camren Kincaid, cutting the Cardinal lead to two points, with a halftime score of 28-26.
William Jewell got off to a very similar start in the second half as they did in the first, scoring the first seven points of the second half for a nine-point advantage. Quincy scored its first bucket of the half with a three from
Max Booher with 17:49 left to play.
The lead would get as large as 11 points for the Cardinals, but the Hawks were able to crawl their way back into things, taking their first lead since the 5:43 mark in the first half. A quick five-point burst from
El Sieger gave the Hawks a 56-64 advantage with 6:23 left in the second half.
Logan Robbins gave the Hawks a five-point lead with 2:58 remaining, with a rebound over multiple defenders and a putback layup. William Jewell quicly answered with a three-pointer in the following possession.
QU was held scoreless after a pair of missed free throws and layups, and William Jewell sent their star player Jeremiah Jordan to the free throw line looking to tie the game with 47 seconds remaining. Jordan would leave the front end short, and convert on the second one, leaving the Hawks with a one point lead and the basketball.
Looking to run a set play on offense, the Hawks turned the basketball over, allowing the Cardinals to have possession with a few-second differential between the shot clock and game clock. Jewell called a timeout, setting up a three-point shot for Jordan that would miss long, but an offensive rebound for the Cardinals allowed for another quick timeout, as the Cardinals would be inbounding underneath.
Coach
Brad Hoyt played the cat-and-mouse game, calling a timeout of his own before WJC inbounded with five seconds left. After a 30-second pause, William Jewell got the basketball into the short corner with the Hawks' defense swarming. The Cardinals were able to kick the basketball out to one of their best shooters, senior guard Luke Jordan, who would hit a deep three with a hand in his face to give WJC a 67-65 lead with 0.8 seconds left.
Quincy set up one last play after a timeout, but the last second prayer from Brown to win the game would miss to the left, and the Hawks fell with a final score of 67-65.
The offense struggled for the Hawks, putting up their second-lowest point total on the season. As a team, they shot 42 percent from the field, 25 percent from behind the arc, and 68 percent from the foul line. QU had three players in double-figures and was led by Sieger with 14 points.
Quincy was able to win the rebounding battle for the eleventh time this season, led by
Jake Hamilton with nine and
Joshua Bocher right behind him with seven boards off the bench. However, QU lost the turnover battle (14-10) and allowed the Cardinals to take 27 free throws, where they converted 20 of them.
