FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The Hawks wrapped up the 2024 campaign at Purdue Fort Wayne taking on the Mastodons on Saturday (Apr. 6). Quincy hung around in every set, but couldn't find the spark it needed to break through in a three-set defeat (20-25, 20-25, 21-25) at the hands of PFW.
Set One
Quincy used three PFW errors and a kill from
Raje Alleyne to lead it 4-3 before six of the next seven points went in favor of the Mastodons to put the Hawks behind 9-5. A couple of kills from Alleyne and an ace for
Logan Gieseke pulled QU within two at 10-8, a distance the Hawks would remain at until Fort Wayne took three of four points at the 16-14 mark to open a 19-15 advantage.
Quincy cut the advantage to three shortly after and held there until a two-point run at 21-18 gave PFW the edge it needed to go on and claim the first set 25-20.
Set Two
Fort Wayne took the first five points and seven of the first eight to jump out ahead in the early going. Quincy claimed six of the next nine points to halve the deficit at 10-7. The Hawks knocked the lead down to two shortly after at 12-10 on another error and kills from Alleyne and
AJ Goedheer.
Later in the set at 14-12 in favor of the Mastodons, PFW sandwiched a
Keegan Carey kill with two and three-point runs to build a 19-13 advantage. QU cut into the six-point lead shortly after, taking four of five points on kills from Carey and Goedheer along with two blocks for Roman Deryckere as well as blocks for
Dylan Feely and Goedheer, but the effort was too late as PFW went on to take the set 25-20.
Set Three
The Hawks leaped out to a 5-3 advantage to open the set thanks to kills from Goedheer and Carey along with a pair of blocks for Carey also including blocks for Deryckere and Gieseke. Fort Wayne responded with eight of the next ten points to build an 11-7 lead.
PFW led by as many as six until a kill from Feely and back-to-back aces from Carey slimmed the margin to three at 17-14. The Mastodons rebuilt the advantage to six at 21-15, prompting Quincy to take five of the next eight points to trim the deficit to 23-20. Gieseke notched the final kill of the season on a feed from Feely to make it 24-21 before Fort Wayne collected the final point to end the set and match with a 25-21 victory.
