Hawks Hit Snag at Lindenwood

ST. CHARLES, Mo. - The Hawks resumed their MIVA schedule after the brief interlude of a single match with a trip to visit the Lions of Lindenwood University. AJ Goedheer eclipsed the double digit kill margin for the first time this season after doing so on seven occasions last year to lead all players in the match with 12 terminations, but it wasn't enough to overcome LU as the Lions took the match in three sets (15-25, 22-25, 19-25).

Set One

Lindenwood got it going early, taking seven of the first nine and a five-point advantage to kickoff the set. Following a pair of kills from Zackary Zdrojeski and Raje Alleyne to make it 7-4, LU ripped off another run of five to press the advantage to nine prompting Coach Kemner to summon Goedheer from the bench.

The Waukesha, WI native deliver a kill on the very next point off a feed from Dylan Feely and the Hawks next kill five points later to make it 16-7. The Lions responded with four straight points before Quincy answered with four of its own on a couple Alleyne aces, another Goedheer kill along with an error.

QU traded points down the stretch but was unable to comeback from the early deficit in a 25-15 winner for the Lions.

Set Two

The Hawks took advantage of four straight LU errors along with two kills from both Goedheer and Keegan Carey along with another termination for Alleyne to lead it 9-5. Quincy maintained the advantage until a three-point Lindenwood run evened the score at 12-12.

QU clapped back with a four-point run thanks to three consecutive kills from Goedheer and an error to replenish the advantage to 16-12. Shortly after at 18-15 a five-point run from LU propelled the Lions ahead 20-18. The Hawks traded points to the 22-21 mark before Lindewood took three of the final four and the set 25-22.

Set Three

Down 5-1 to open the third set, Quincy took four straight points as part of a 6-1 run to gain a 7-6 edge. The Lions grabbed seven of the next nine to build a 13-9 lead prompting a four-point QU run on a kill and block for Roman Deryckere along with another kill for Goedheer to equalize at 13-13.

Eight of the next 11 points went to LU to build a five-point edge in the late stages of the set leading 21-16. Goedheer delivered his match-leading 12th kill on a pass from Logan Brouwer to form the Hawks response, but it was too little too late as Lindenwood would go on to take the matches final frame by a 25-19 score.

Next Up

Quincy continues its five-game road stretch with a non-conference test at Maryville on Friday (Mar. 8). First serve between the Hawks and Saints is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
