Last Minute Push Not Enough in Hawks Loss against Griffons

St. Joseph, Mo. - The Quincy University women's lacrosse team traveled to the western side of Missouri for a double dose of lacrosse on Sunday afternoon (Feb. 25) against Missouri Western and Ottawa University. Their first game, against GLVC opponent, Missouri Western, ended in a one-goal decision, favoring the Griffons.

The Hawks needed some time to gain some footing in the game, giving up a few turnovers and goals prior to the Hawks' first point on the scoreboard. Danielle Robinson led the Hawks with a goal in the final minutes of the first quarter. Amelia Ham pressed forward off a turnover to get herself a goal before the whistle blew at the end of the first quarter, helping keep the score at bay.

The newest additions to the Hawks propelled the Hawks forward in the second quarter. Junior transfer Felicia Young scored her first goal as a Hawk for a Robinson pass to tie the game up. Not thirty seconds later did Anni Moran score a free position, man-up goal to push the Hawks past the Griffons. Amelia Ham scored her second of the game, which was later followed with an assist to Emily Leal's first goal of the contest. Kelly McClure had nine saves in the first half alone to keep the Hawks ahead.

Freshman Moran wasted no time in the third quarter, scoring another goal within the first minute of the quarter. Ham scored her third and final goal just a minute later, putting the Hawks up 8-5.

The lead didn't last long for the Hawks in the third; the Griffons found gusto for three goals in two minutes, tying the game up at 8. Moran wasn't a fan of the tied score, so she put another into the back of the net, giving the Hawks the lead once again. The Griffons came back with four unanswered goals in the bottom half of the quarter.

Robinson returned one goal at the start of the fourth quarter off a free position opportunity. Leal forced a shot to the back of the net in a man-up situation off a toss from Ham. Robinson had one more free position shot go past the goalie, but it was not enough to regain the lead.

Mikenna Ham led the team with three ground balls while Leal led the team in caused turnovers. McClure finished with 15 saves in the contest, the most she has had in her final campaign.

The Hawks had a few hours of time before their next game against Ottawa University.
