FAYETTE, IA. - In a thrilling Thursday evening (Feb. 22) GLVC showdown between the Hawks and Upper Iowa, basketball enthusiasts were treated to a high-scoring contest that unfolded with excitement and intensity down to the very end. Despite QU's commendable efforts, the game concluded with a score of 85-81 in favor of Upper Iowa.
The Hawks got off hot, leading the game by as many as 11 in the first half of play right around the six minute mark of the first half at 32-22 before having the advantage chiseled down to 41-38 at the halftime break thanks to a couple of three-points and a ton of free throws from UIU.
Quincy held the lead for roughly the first five minutes of the second half until the peacocks knotted the score at 50-50. The Hawks bounced back-and-forth between small leads and deficits until UIU created a bit of an opening late in the game taking a six-point lead with just under a minute and a half left. QU drew within a point 40 seconds later, but consistent Peacock free throw shooting came through down the stretch to hold on.
Zion Richardson delivered a stellar performance leading the Hawks with an impressive 25 points while also also pulling down 15 rebounds for his fifth double-double of the year. Isaiah Foster also played a crucial role, contributing 20 points through a combination of threes and successful free throws while also adding four assist and a pair of double-digit scoring.
Despite the strong performance, the Hawks faced a determined UIU team that displayed a cohesive and well-rounded effort, shooting 49% from the field as a team in the contest and nearly 84% from the charity stripe including to seal the victory.
